An authentic, accepting and respectful therapeutic relationship coupled with considerable experience and training in CBT, DBT, trauma, grief and relationship work and also considerable life experience is what I can bring to our partnership.
Accepting New Clients. Authentic, respectful, accepting: I offer a therapeutic relationship and evidence-based treatment to help you live your best life. I believe that unresolved issues and problems have the power to control the direction of our lives and cause real pain. This pain can take the form of depression, anxiety, trouble regulating emotion, sleep problems and poor self esteem. Problems in relationships as well as coming to terms with loss can often be the hardest ones. Difficulties at work and questioning career choice are other important areas of our life that can be negatively effected.

I am unable to accept new clients for both in-person and telehealth therapy at this time. I understand how difficult it can be for some to ask for help. Whether you're considering entering therapy for the first time, or have prior experience, the first priority is on developing a sense of safety in the therapy session. Once a trusting connection is developed, I allow the client to identify their own goals. I believe therapy is about change, but the type of change we work toward and the pace with which we work, is determined by the client. I provide support and guidance in this process.

Each of us have faced painful personal experiences. Pain can be due to events, interactions with others or troubled relationships. Or they can be caused by negative behavior or thought patterns that won’t stop. Sometimes we can address such troubles on their own. However, if you have been unable to resolve difficult issues alone, you may realize how they reduce the quality of your life – by establishing a pattern of emotional problems, an inability to interact productively with others, impacting your career, negatively affect relationships, or create problematic habits. But they can be addressed with help. My hours are M-F 8-4

My work with couples enhances communication when it has been hindered by trauma, illness, infidelity, or other stressors.
I integrate a mind-body perspective into my work. Our racing minds let us know when we are feeling stress. Our bodies exhibit stress as tension, pain, or illness. I teach mindfulness and somatic wellness skills that help regulate and calm the nervous system. A calm mind & body aids exploration, growth, and communication.

I survived a childhood of trauma and multiple challenges.
Hi. Are you feeling overwhelmed and anxious? Are you feeling disconnected from others and having a difficult time communicating needs and desires to loved ones? I can help with that. I have been working with people on communication and negotiation of needs for many years. Being raised in a foster home, by my adopted parents, has helped my gain skills that I would not have had the opportunity to acquire otherwise, such as, accepting everyone for who they are and where they come from regardless of their background.

I have over 20 years of experience working with a wide range of problems, especially those related to sexual and non-sexual trauma and abuse.
I am a psychoanalytic and existential psychologist. I am best suited to working with people who are motivated to question themselves, willing to tolerate ambiguity and forego ready-made advice, and to confront the parts of themselves that are difficult to bear. If you feel ready to do the "deep" work that you may have avoided in therapy before, we may be a good match. Please see my website at www.michaelmillerphd dotcom for more information.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
