This solution oriented therapy works well for marital, family, parent -child, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and phase of life issues.
I will be offering periodic updates. I hope that this will be helpful to you and familiarize you with my thinking. For divorcing parents: Make sure your children know you are divorcing each other and not them. Be dependable - visit when you say you will. Keep your children out of the middle - argue in private. Take your time introducing someone new or living with someone. When possible maintain connections with extended family. Work on yourself so you are the best parent you can be. Children take time to adjust. There may be a delay before they discover feelings about the divorce.

I am a developmental psychologist and a licensed marriage and family therapist. I specialize in children, adolescents, parenting , co- parenting , and family systems. I believe that each member of a family impacts every other member, so when issues arise in one member, each member is affected. I place a high importance on communication within a family to help them to improve family dynamics. Issues in an individual or a family can arise at any time, so clients will graduate therapy with the skills they need to conquer future stressors.

Hello, welcome to my page on psychology today. I'm a seasoned Clinical Psychologist working at Stony Brook University Hospital in their Outpatient Department. My work is eclectic and integrated between a dynamic perspective and integrative CBT. I work with people who want to learn to feel ok with their experiences, regulate their emotions, and create a more satisfying life. It is my clinical intention to help resolve the problems that prevent them from achieving these goals. I believe in empowering people to help themselves through self-understanding. I've trained in Functional Family Therapy which is a strength-based approach to viewing the family as a whole and seeing that all members serve a purpose in the family, not blaming the parent or child, while improving communication and relationships.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
