We seek therapy when we find ourselves stuck. My role is to help you get unstuck so that you can live a happier and more rewarding life. Working collaboratively, we will identify and explore unrecognized patterns of relationship. Our basic experience of the world is largely determined by the nature of these patterns. I can help you change these patterns, and in this way to discover new possibilities for living.

Have the huge life changes induced by the Covid-19 pandemic brought you to the brink of despair? Many patients grapple with employment change or loss and a resulting lack of structure, identity and purpose in life. Others struggle with spending 24 hours a day with their partners and/or children and attempt to console themselves with substances. Older folks and ones with chronic and/or life-threatening disease experience increased isolation and helplessness. We've all lost some of our favorite coping mechanisms! Psychotherapy enables you to reveal a self you may have kept hidden and to cope and change in ways that you desire.

I have extensive experience working with veterans living with PTSD, individuals and their family members navigating cancer treatment, end-of-life care, and grief, individuals currently living in or who have a history of abusive relationships, including coping with recent experiences of assault, as well as individuals experiencing anxiety, and depression.
The therapy I practice aims to explore the way in which our layers of experience inform the way we interact with ourselves and the world around us. Through our work together, we will acknowledge and understand the destructive forces that often lay outside of our awareness while identifying and strengthening the constructive forces each of us embody. I strive to provide a safe and nonjudgmental environment where my clients can experiment with thoughts, ideas, and perspectives to bring about clarity, confidence, and authenticity. I enjoy supporting individuals who are looking to experience a deeper understanding of themselves.

Congratulations, you've taken the first step toward emotional well-being. Seeking help is a sign of strength. The past few years have been a disorienting and tumultuous time. With recent landmark rulings it doesn't look like it will be getting easier anytime soon. But you don't have to go through it alone. I believe you'll find me empathic, curious and as a client once told me, "You care and you keep it real." I believe this to be true because this is my second career. My life experience has enabled me to walk in many people's shoes. Now I'd like to walk beside you on your journey.

Acknowledging that you need support is the first step in the therapeutic process. I aim to partner with you to explore the ways in which your unique experiences have informed the way you interact with others and the world around you. Clients will develop action-based goals with check ins and planning and practice in session. Clients should be open to trying a new way of doing things.

I work with clients who struggle with depression & anxiety, shame, fear, and traumas -- those looking to find relief from pain and hardships, general or specific. Clients may have had traditional talk therapy and gain a cognitive understanding of WHY they feel as they do. Have the emotions/feelings ever been worked through your system, through your body, in order for you to find relief? Has it be processed in a way that frees your energy for purposes that YOU direct?

I have over 30 years of experience providing psychological interventions with adults and groups. I work best with individuals and couples who are facing an array of life challenges and stresssors. Those who have a sense of where they want to go but who are having difficulty getting there. I provide a safe and nurturing environment in which the therapeutic relationship can grow. A place where obstacles, fears and stressors can be diminished and desires realized.

I am currently not accepting new clients ...... Welcome! It can be hard to recognize that you might have parts of your life that you have pushed aside or are uncomfortable with. It takes a lot of courage to acknowledge this & then to take the steps to reach out to someone for assistance. I believe in working as a partner with people to explore areas that cause difficulty, to build upon solutions that have previously worked, & to learn new skills to improve one's ability to cope. I enjoy getting to know the people I work with & finding solutions that are unique to them.

I do not see a person’s experiences, thoughts and emotions as reducible to biological phenomena. Nor do I see them as reducible to a binary – “well vs. unwell,” “functional vs. non-functional” – binaries are for computers, and we are so much more than that. It is possible to have multiple, seemingly contradictory feelings simultaneously. In fact, I would argue that it is necessary to maximize “mental health.” t’s ok to be frustrated. It’s ok to be sad. It’s ok to have doubt. Feelings are messengers. We need to listen to what they have to tell us, not try to force them away.

How can I find a therapist in Cold Spring?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
