Parenting Therapists in Clarence, NY

Colleen Siskar
Art Therapist, LCAT, ATR-BC
Clarence, NY 14031
I offer therapy sessions with children in person, with teens and parents online via video.
I am a licensed and board -certified art therapist registered with the American Art Therapy Association. I specialize in working with children and adolescents. I support young people who may be struggling with anxiety, ADHD, emotional regulation, depression, trauma, grief and loss. Many of the children I work with experience challenges with impulse control, school stress, or behaviors that can feel overwhelming for both the child and their family. Using art therapy and psychotherapy, I help children express feelings that may be difficult to put into words while building skills for emotional regulation.

In this day and age, there are so many opinions on parenting, which is why I also offer parent consultation and training for children who engage in big behaviors when dysregulated to assist with co-regulation and strategies to both prevent outbursts and how to respond to them.
As a licensed psychologist trained in both school and counseling psychology, I offer individual therapy services for children, adolescents, and young adults with a wide variety of presenting concerns (e.g., anxiety, adjustment, developing executive functioning skills, ADHD, autism, stress management, etc.). My approach is neurodiversity-affirming and strengths-based. I specialize in working with high masking teens, and I strive to create a space where clients can explore their authentic selves without judgment.

My clients come to see me seeking assistance for a wide variety of issues related to anxiety, depression, mental/physical illness, grief and loss, trauma, stress, and unexplained anger. I believe in exploring issues from a family perspective; where did you come from and how did you come to be who, and how, you are? When you struggle in your life, it can sometimes become too easy to focus solely on what is wrong, forgetting what is right. Working together, you can get back on the right path.

Our human emotional experience is complicated and can sometimes get in the way of our goals or our relationships. We often judge our reactions or ourselves for having them because they can lead to impulsivity or emotional suffering, and of course we would prefer to avoid this. If we can learn to experience our thoughts, feelings, and actions in the moment without judgment or assumption, we can learn to work with our emotions, accept things we wish were different and more effectively enact change. This allows us to focus on what we can control to work towards your goals for yourself, relationships, and life.

I’m not your average therapist. I help people RAPIDLY reclaim their lives from suffering and develop a new, healthy way of living. I help my clients feel relief in just a few sessions. How you ask? Well, I could give you coping skills to help with your symptoms, and sometimes I will. But what I have found most beneficial is tracing the symptoms back to the root of your issues and repairing the mental injury. This can oftentimes be completed in one session. Therapy doesn’t have to be a long or distressing process. If you're ready to start feeling better and live a life in alignment with your potential, let's go!

I think it's important to acknowledge that we all struggle, but sometimes that struggle gets to be more often or more overwhelming than we know how to handle and we can benefit from an additional source of support, understanding and obtain some resources and skills that can help reduce our distress. We can work together to improve your ability to cope with daily life stressors or major life events with individual or family counseling. I have over 14 years experience working with adults, adolescents and children struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship problems and other difficult situations.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
