EMDR Therapists in Cheektowaga, NY
I am intensely trained in EMDR, and I hold additional training in DBT, Gottman Method, and Perinatal Mood Disorders.
Healing from adversity can feel scary, unfamiliar, and daunting. In my therapy practice, I strive to provide a safe, non-judgmental, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive space for individuals to heal and grow. Oftentimes, when we experience trauma and other life changes, we develop coping skills that aid in our survival, but that may presently pose barriers. In embarking on this journey to healing and breaking difficult patterns, we can work together to help you develop self-compassion, improve relationships, and transform your pain into power.

As an EMDR Consultant, I’ve seen how traditional talk therapy can sometimes feel like running in circles.
We won’t just analyze your problems; we will work together to track how your body holds stress and resilience in the present moment. This process allows us to resolve old wounds at a pace that feels safe and sustainable for you. My goal isn’t just to help you 'manage', it’s to help you feel truly at home in your own skin again.

I am an EMDR practitioner that utilizes Schema therapy, IFS and DBT to address the unique challenges of each client.
Each client presents with their own unique set of needs and challenges relative to the environments they were raised in. What many identify as disorders or dysfunction I view as necessary adaptations to environmental stressors. Within the context of that thinking people need to be able to function and manage their lives in a way that provides space for healing, happiness and love. I believe that what people desire most is to be seen, to live autonomously with self determination, and to feel connected to something greater than themselves, be it a cause, a community, an organization or God.

My training includes Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing ( EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Positive Psychology, and Seeking Safety, along with a number of other evidence-based treatment modalities.
I have worked in the human services field for over 20 years and have been a licensed social worker since 2010. Throughout that time, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds as they navigate a wide range of life challenges. Many of the individuals I have worked with have experienced traumas that have led to struggles with either their emotional/mental well being and/or substance use. I deeply believe that regardless of the struggles people experience, everyone is capable of being a better version of themself and building a quality of life that gives them meaning and purpose.

I use a blend of practical tools tailored to your needs:
EMDR to help your brain process and 'file away' painful memories so they no longer trigger you, DBT, a concrete toolkit for managing intense emotions, and MI to help find clarity when stuck.

Perhaps you’re navigating the complexities of coming out, managing the weight of minority stress, or trying to process past traumas that still feel 'loud' in your daily life. You deserve a therapist who truly 'gets it' and provides a soft place to land.
My style is collaborative, direct, and deeply affirming. I believe therapy is a partnership where your lived experience is respected and your goals are the priority. We’ll work together to build the resilience you already possess and create the peace of mind you deserve.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
