Sexual Abuse Therapists in Chappaqua, NY
My clients are often intellectually curious, creatively driven individuals who have struggled to find spaces where they feel genuinely understood. Many are drawn to exploring deeper questions around identity, meaning, relationships, and the human experience. I frequently work with those who identify as the “black sheep” within high-achieving or complex family systems, as well as artists, performers, clinicians, and high-visibility professionals.
You may be navigating trauma, anxiety, distrust, dissociation, identity exploration, unusual perceptual experiences, or the complicated intersection of visibility, success and isolation.

When sex, intimacy, or trust breaks down, carrying it alone is exhausting. Maybe the physical closeness has stopped and sex feels like a source of tension rather than connection. Maybe the shock of infidelity left you feeling hypervigilant, disconnected, and unsure how to heal. Or perhaps you are navigating non-monogamy and want to talk through the real complexities without judgment or being talked out of it. You deserve a space where you can speak openly, drop the shame, break the patterns keeping you stuck, and build a relationship that actually works.

I have twenty five years of experience and training helping families change their communication patterns n a short term systemic model. These behaviors can actually perpetuate the very problems you are trying to solve!

Life inevitably involves struggle. The goal of therapy is to understand the source of your current struggles in order to live more fully and effectively. In my experience, life difficulties are either long standing or acute. The enduring difficulties are often the result of underlying patterns that result in feeling stuck, anxious or depressed. These patterns may manifest in relationship problems, parenting difficulties or low self esteem. Acute situations, such as death or divorce, take time to process and can trigger earlier losses. In either situation, the wish to function and feel better is what motivates us to seek therapy.

Do you feel like you have it together on the outside, while privately feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of yourself? You may spend a lot of time overthinking, second-guessing yourself, or trying to keep everything together. Even when you understand where some of these patterns come from, you may still find yourself responding in ways you wish you could change. You want to feel differently—not just understand why you feel this way. I work primarily with women experiencing anxiety, self-doubt, the effects of childhood or relational trauma, self-esteem concerns, and relationship difficulties.

We learn to survive before we come to understand ourselves. The ways we have adapted may have once served us, but over time they often limit the lives we long to live. Therapy offers a chance to meet these protective parts with curiosity and compassion, loosening their hold on us. When we stop fighting ourselves, something unexpected happens. The qualities we long for - connection, creativity, joy and vitality - begin to emerge. Again and again, I've watched people discover that who they truly are was never lost; it was simply hidden beneath the work of surviving.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
