There’s no handbook that truly prepares you for parenting, and it can be even more complex if your child or adolescent has anxiety or behavioral challenges. As a parent, it can be incredibly difficult to see your child in distress, and not knowing how to respond in these moments can leave you feeling confused and powerless. If your child’s anxiety is stopping them from participating in everyday activities, or if you are a parent struggling with how to manage your child’s behavior, you and your child can gain the support and tools you need to make a positive change.

I bring extensive life/professional/extended family experience to help you manage your transitions and the anxiety of your teen children.
In my current virtual practice I am working with many age groups dealing with the anxiety of trying to cope: with getting ready for college; with city life and roommates; with relationship partners; with making decisions to move ahead with relationship commitment, or not and if so, how; all ages attempting to cope with remote work and cramped living arrangements; and the pain and changed nature of our current city life. I help patients seeking relationships, fixing them and leaving them.

"I believe that compassion for oneself is the key to feeling better. When we can stop idealizing and stop trying to be what we're not, we can learn to have compassion and acceptance of who we really are. Accepting our human condition with its limitations, leads to self-knowledge, which leads to growth and ultimately to comfort within ourselves.

I love the look on a teen 's face when they see that I "get it.
With over 20 years experience, I have developed a level of insight that is critical in helping your child work through his/her issues. I seek to help you and/or your child live in the present instead of dwelling on the past and/or worrying about the future. I am an interactive participant with you and/or your child in the growth process. At our first meeting I want you to know coming to talk to me does not mean you are "crazy" or "weird." Instead you are brave and smart to face your issues and get help for them.

Twenty years of experience working with families of kids who have trouble fitting in. Most have difficulty regulating their mood and behavior and are wired differently than other kids. The focus of my work is to understand why certain behaviors repeatedly occur and to help families and schools develop better ways of dealing with those problems. My private practice is dedicated to working with children and adolescents, helping them learn how to express their emotions and gain control over their behaviors. I use principals of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and psyco-dynamic relations to teach young people to overcome difficulties from anxiety, depression, and other issues. For children dealing with pressures such as divorce, friendship difficulties and academic stress I offer a safe environment for them to give voice to their concerns and develop a problem solving plan. During the entire process I provide critical parental feedback.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
