While my main approach is
psychodynamic
, my training spans the following modalities: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Therapy, & Yoga (RYT-200).
I specialize in the treatment of relational trauma. This type of trauma occurs when a person's early relationships are characterized by neglect or abuse, often leading to disturbances in self-image and turbulent adult relationships. Maybe you are a "people pleaser", constantly torn between your own wishes and a sense of duty to others. Or you keep finding yourself in romantic relationships with the same kind of partner who cannot meet your needs. Perhaps you feel that something is just off and you can't figure out why. Together, we can explore how your experiences early in life are contributing to behavior patterns today.

I approach my work with clients from a non-judgmental, empathetic, caring and nurturing approach. Therapy should be driven by the clients needs and a safe place to bring issues and concerns, without fear of judgment or rejection. You, the client, should determine what we will discuss as well as the goals we work on together. I hope through our time spent together, you will have the opportunity to explore areas of concerns, as well as feel better and less stressed in your daily life.

I believe we all need a judgment-free safe space where we can mindfully explore what's going on with us. We find ourselves in a life of change, yet often find ourselves repeating old habits, old patterns of thinking and recreating familiar situations. Sometimes life transitions catch us off-guard, and we don't know how to adapt. My goal is to create that safe space for you; to provide a respectful, supportive and collaborative therapeutic relationship to unlock greater self-awarenesss, positive change, and a happier more balanced life.

Today’s world is a complex interplay of demands from both internal and external sources. You don’t have to go it alone. I began as a Clinical Therapist 27 years ago helping people move through changes and challenges in their lives. During this time, I have also been a biology teacher at the secondary level. It is this combination of experiences, as a science educator, with a background in mental health, that has given me a unique perspective. It is this perspective that allows me to help people navigate through life’s journeys.

My goal as an integrated heath care professional is to treat the whole body; so patients can experience changes in sensation, perception, thought or behavior corresponding to his or their mental or physical health needs. My success in treating chronic illness is founded in the idea that all therapeutic relationships are a partnership of patient and clinician in restoring the body to health. The use of Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy can address a variety of physical and mental health issues in a shorter time; with longer lasting effects.

Many of us want to feel better, but do not know how to use positive coping strategies to change our lives for the better. I have experience in helping with those difficult life challenges. I can help guide a person towards a more fulfilling and stable life by using a variety of techniques (CBT; DBT; or EMDR).

What's the bottom line in therapy? To help a client to take control of his or her own life. As an advanced level, PhD clinical social worker, (Columbia University), I apply only evidence-based techniques known to help clients learn how to live more satisfying lives, at work, school or at home. Widely trained in cognitive behavioral therapy, I work in the most direct way to evaluate how they interact with others, and to identify where and how changes could be made, and where support is available. Additional training allows me to integrate the visual arts to enhance self awareness and problem solving where appropriate.

It's hard to think about starting therapy. And maybe it's never worked in the past. And often it can be more difficult when you've experienced what is considered a trauma, even if you don't think of your life that way. You just know you're not happy and haven't been in a long time. Sometimes therapy works when you try one more time. Maybe you just have to be ready.

Do you sometimes feel at a distance from your own life and relationships, a loss of initiative and aliveness to your experiences? Or become overly involved, quick to feel anxious and overwhelmed? In an engaged, supportive and interactive working relationship, you and I can identify and build upon strengths, goals and values, lend force and action to your search for meaning and belonging, and resolve emotional struggles. I believe that many difficulties are related to our unconscious thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and the unhealthy defenses that we erect, usually in childhood, to protect ourselves against hurt. Once helpful, but now outdated, these defenses prevent self-awareness and the constructive resolution of our problems. These blocks to awareness can contribute to symptoms such as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, interpersonal problems, addictive behaviors, etc. I can assist you in developing healthier coping skills, i.e, to identify your defenses, explore your underlying feelings, and rediscover your authentic self.

I am a psychotherapist trained in
psychodynamic
therapy, as well as EMDR.
We all have behaviors that protect us from being hurt. For example shutting down emotionally or trying to make everyone around us happy, negating our own needs. The problem with these behaviors is they keep us from having a full and joyful life. We all want to feel connected, to feel seen, and to feel like we matter. I will help you identify unhealthy behaviors, and support you in changing them so you create healthy relationships and can feel good about yourself. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or unfulfilling relationships you deserve a caring and empathetic therapist.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
