Are you struggling with avoidance, anger, overworking, excessive substance use, or impulsivity?
My sessions tend to be unstructured to allow for exploration and insight-building. I also teach concrete skills to help you become more mindful, regulate your nervous system, and tolerate distress. When it comes to substance use, I use a harm reduction model. I also work with many people whose goal is total abstinence.

I specialize in drug and alcohol abuse, with 10+ years providing individual and group therapy for people trying to reduce, moderate or stop their substance use.
Change is possible. You CAN feel better. You may be skeptical that what you're struggling with can be helped, blaming and judging yourself instead. You may be frustrated by many attempts to make things better without helping. A part of you may want to avoid looking at what is happening straight on for fear it could make things worse. These fears are normal. With kindness, curiosity, and a helpful framework, we can address these concerns while also allowing you to get the help you need.

Are you finding that the tools that you have turned to cope, like substance use and avoidance, has taken hold of your life?
I’ll help you tap into your authentic motivations and support you in making sense of your life in the context of previous relationships, social forces, and biology. Diagnoses are tools to identify a path forward, not a life sentence. I adapt evidence-based and somatic interventions so that your agency and empowerment comes first.

I work with individuals, couples and families confronting issues of depression, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, loss, parenting issues, aging, trauma and alcohol/ substance use.
Life experiences can bring pain and conflict resulting in depression, anxiety and coping with substances. I frequently hear the expression of loneliness, emptiness and feeling unfulfilled in people's lives and the sadness, disappointment and anger over relationships with themselves, partners, family and friends that fail to satisfy those needs. Experience has taught me that feeling heard and understood generates a sense of hope and stimulates movement toward insight through exploration and examination of one's inner life. Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers the framework and space for this work, leading to corrective emotional experiences and a more satisfying life and relationships.

Being part of the LBGTQ+ communities I have worked with a diverse range of people who have experienced depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, grief, struggles with substance use and life transitions.
Every life has a history of twist and turns, with episodes of successes, failures, challenges, decisions, changes and losses. We often inhabit patterns that once helped us to survive, yet now hinder us in recognizing or becoming who we truly are. These patterns can affect a variety of life issues, such as goal attainment, difficulties in relationships, and our ability to communicate, leaving us feeling frustrated, confused, or stuck.

This mindfulness practice allows you to become more connected to yourself and your environment, often resulting in gaining new confidence and identifying new solutions.

I have expertise working with substance use/addiction, complex trauma, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, mood disorders, and LGBTQIA+ folks.
Feeling stuck or like your current reality isn't aligned with what you imagined for yourself can be overwhelming, upsetting, and daunting. In starting Attuned Mind Therapy, my goal was to help people feel more in sync with themselves and others, regardless of whether they are struggling with depression, anxiety, or other challenges with connection and well-being, such as interpersonal relationships, intimacy, trauma, and integrating difficult emotions.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
