I specialize in working with individuals and couples looking to explore issues related to relationships, sex and sexuality . Often times shame, guilt, anxiety and sadness are the core emotions at the center of our distress. Together we can work towards facing some of these feelings in order to lead you towards a path of healing and empowerment. In understanding yourself and your needs better I hope you can begin to feel more confident in making decisions, letting go of the things you may have been holding onto, or feeling more connected to yourself and others.

I have had a lifelong passion for sexual health and believe it can be an integral part of our well-being. I hope to help people surmount any obstacles to engaging in the sex they want to have, whether that be due to anxiety or depression, body image or self-esteem issues, challenges with relationships or desire, questions of identity, or sexual difficulties after trauma or STI diagnosis. My goal is to help clients overcome the taboo of talking about sex and sexuality , to free themselves from the sexual shame and stigma that is inherent in our society, and to aid people in finding pleasure in themselves, their bodies, and each other.

Sexuality plays an integral role in our identity, as humans are innately sexual and social beings. However, sexual issues frequently go unspoken in therapy. Sex therapy can help address a wide array of issues by providing a safe space to discuss and normalize fears or concerns, develop a deeper understanding of yourself and relationship with others, and receive assistance in taking steps necessary to realize your sexual potential. Working collaboratively, I provide an open space to discuss concerns and create goals. My belief is sex therapy can provide the foundation necessary to live more pleasurable and sex positive lives.

Sexual problems are difficult to talk about for most people and can cause great distress. Sex therapy is designed to put people at ease so that they can feel as comfortable as possible talking about these problems and to find practical solutions. Some of the typical problems I work with include specific sexual dysfunctions (e.g., premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, difficulties with orgasm) and more general problems such as lack of sexual desire, sexual orientation and gender issues, unusual sexual behaviors, shyness and social inhibition.

I have trained extensively in child and adolescent therapy, narrative and couples therapy, and sex therapy .
Whether working with couples, adolescents, families, or adult individuals, I see the therapy room as a place for clients to discuss the parts of themselves and their lives that they can’t talk about anywhere else. My approach is open, playful, and collaborative. I use a combination of narrative therapy, mindfulness, and psychodynamic techniques to help clients identify the stories they tell about themselves that are unhelpful; by examining and eliminating these, clients are better able to grow and change.

We are rarely given any kind of formal relational education (and sex education is a whole other part of this story!) but rather a relational socialization.
Hi my name is Shula Melamed I am a Relationship and Wellbeing Coach. My focus is on helping people build better relationships - with others and most importantly, themselves. Individuals and couples come to me when they are looking to not only improve their interactions with others but to also understand how and where they might be holding themselves back from living bigger and bolder lives. I have an MA in Psychology from The New School University and an MPH in Social Medical Sciences - Sexuality and Health from Columbia University. I have been working with individuals, couples and groups since 2013.

Sex Therapy

Who is sex therapy for?

Sex problems are common in relationships. Many people want a better sex life and want to feel loved and desired by their partner. It is difficult for couples to resolve sexual problems on their own because people often feel ashamed to talk about their sexual desires fearing they are not normal, when in fact a very broad range of preferences and behaviors are normal. A sex therapist can help clarify this and other matters.

Why do people need sex therapy?

Many people do not know how to talk about their erotic needs or their emotional needs, both of which are addressed in sex therapy. Couples often live with sexual difficulties for years before seeking help, and in that time, partners may experience so much disappointment and alienation that they may fear their problems mean they are incompatible. Once people experience disappointment, it is difficult to find resolution without help.

What happens in sex therapy?

People have many misconceptions about what takes place in sex therapy. First, it is a form of talk therapy in which partners discuss their sexual concerns; it does not involve touching or physical exploration of any kind. Sex therapy typically helps couples get comfortable talking to each other about sex so that, in the privacy of their home life, they can openly discuss their sexual desires and make decisions about what they want to do. Couples are typically assigned activities to do at home that build intimacy skills.

What kinds of problems do sex therapists treat?

Very often, partners differ in their degree of sexual desire and struggle over how often to have sex. Or they may have fights about porn use or have difficulty connecting sexually after one partner is unfaithful. Men may have problems with premature ejaculation. Women may find themselves struggling to become aroused or to achieve an orgasm. Sometimes partners feel like they have lost the sense of attraction to their partner. These are all common issues dealt with in sex therapy.
