Seeing your child angry, depressed, anxious, and engaging in self destructive behaviors like cutting or using substances is overwhelming, confusing and frightening.
Using a strength-focused and person-centered approach to therapy, I empower my clients to find their voice and support them as they develop coping skills, process their emotions, and grow into their genuine self. My areas of focus include self-harming behaviors, low self esteem, depression, anxiety, substance use, and LGBTQIA+ identity exploration.

An analytically-trained clinician, with a decades-long academic background in literature and psychoanalysis, I work with people--of diverse histories/cultures/ways and walks of life--struggling with anxieties, inhibitions, symptoms, obsessions, self-harming tendencies, loss.
You may be feeling stuck, knotted up; undone by anxiety or anger; haunted by memories you simply cannot shake. Our work together can help. Attending with care to your unique passions, desires, fears—and to a history that may feel known but not quite your own—psychoanalytic work can help transform the very narrative of your life. Inviting into speech parts of yourself that may be hungering to speak, and sometimes hiding in plain sight, psychodynamic treatment can lead even the deepest of psychic pain to fall away, all the while allowing something new, something freeing, to emerge.

In addition to helping clients improve their family dynamics or individual blocks to fulfillment, I am experienced in helping people eliminate self-harming behaviors which impede their progress.
As a retired school counselor with extensive background in dealing with substance abuse issues, I am best positioned to assist clients with difficulties related to social, academic or behavioral issues. I am particularly attuned to the ways in which parenting styles impact upon the functioning of children and to the most efficient ways of creating change to promote the likeliness of a person's or family's success and happiness. At times, these are most effectively addressed through an examination and fostering of an individual's goal-setting and motivation and how these may encumber his or her movement on the path to future satisfaction.

Integrating empathic, cutting-edge psychological ideas stemming from current research in learning, development and human interaction, I support clients as they gain insights, enhance self-awareness and work through self-defeating patterns that often lead to feeling “stuck
To others it may appear that you have it all together, but deep down there are things weighing on your heart or mind. You may feel a sense of anxiety, doubt, sadness or frustration without quite understanding why it persists. Or perhaps you have concerns about different areas of your life or the quality of your relationships, knowing well you want them to be different. Wherever you feel a sense of uneasiness, it is my goal to create a safe space for you to talk about and explore these areas, to honor your feelings and to be present as you foster self-awareness. Over time, self-awareness makes dealing with life's obstacles easier.

Many come in knowing their usual tools aren’t cutting it and want new ways to connect and feel grounded.
My style is rooted in a relational approach to therapy where our connection is key. Using humor and direct language, I pull from different theoretical modalities, integrating them to tailor unique treatments. I have extensive, advanced training and experience in trauma recovery, sex therapy, and trans-affirming care.

We specialize in working with trauma survivors, LGBTQIA+, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, Trans and Gender-Nonconforming, Self-Harming, Addicted, fat/larger-bodied, disabled, kink/BDSM, and polyamorous people.
You worry all the time about being judged by other people. You feel disconnected from your body and, at the same time, feel like it’s all you think about. You question what you say, how your body looks, if you’re doing things “right,” and there are so many times where your mind feels like it’s on a hamster wheel that you can’t stop. You feel on edge all day and sometimes even feel like you may be having a heart attack. You don’t feel like you fit in anywhere. You’ve been made fun of before for so many different parts of who you are. You’ve been called weird or have been misunderstood at work, in your family, and even in some of your dating relationships. You’ve struggled to find someone who feels like a good fit romantically, and you’re worried there’s something wrong with you. You want to feel more connected to yourself again…

Welcome! I work primarily with adults who struggle with trauma and its consequent impact and symptoms within the self and interpersonally. I work collaboratively with clients to identify the barriers that keep them stuck and unable to meet their full potential and aliveness. I introduce mindfulness skills, breath work, body awareness, resourcing and bilateral stimulation, including EMDR, and Somatic Experiencing, depending on an individual's unique needs. I reference a variety of theories, ranging from psychoanalytic and psychodynamic to cognitively and behaviorally based. I also apply neuroscience and trauma theory.

We can all get trapped in a way of thinking or relating to the world that does not serve our end goals. I work with clients to help them become aware of these patterns, understand their origin and utility, while at the same time fostering the freedom, perspective, and skills to break away from these patterns when needed. I view therapy as a co-investigative process, where you and I can look together, with neutrality, curiosity and compassion, at the forces that are shaping your emotional life, and see if there might be a different way of experiencing the world.

Many of my clients are women who are ready for change but feel stuck—whether navigating trauma, relationship challenges, parenting at different stages, or experiencing the natural shifts of menopause, perimenopause, Hashimoto’s, PMDD, PCOS, or body image concerns. They seek greater balance, connection, and well-being but may feel uncertain about where to start. I support clients in deepening self-awareness and resilience by exploring how life experiences shape their emotions and relationships. My goal is to provide a compassionate, non-pathologizing, and non-judgmental space where healing and transformation can thrive.

It can be overwhelming searching for a therapist. With so many approaches & therapies available now, it can be confusing to know what kind of help will actually feel right or make a difference for you. On top of that, being vulnerable with another person can be scary, even if they are a professional. This is why the first step of any healing process is the creation of a safe and caring space for my patients. I work well with people who struggle with overwhelming feelings, such as shame, low self-worth, depression, anxiety, hypersensitivity, emotional dysregulation, &/or have difficulty in their relationships or with intimacy.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
