While I use a
psychoanalytic
lens - I am interactive and you will feel there is a person in the room with you.
I have over 25 years of postgraduate experience and an ongoing passion and engagement in the art of psychotherapy. When the fit is right, a good therapeutic relationship can provide a powerful vehicle for healing and transformation. I think for therapy to really gel, you need to feel that your therapist gets you, perhaps in a way few others have. People I work with often tell me they have that experience with me, that they feel fully seen and understood. They also feel that I like and enjoy them.

I have extensive training in psychodynamic/
psychoanalytic
therapy.
Throughout life we encounter a variety of ways which we have been holding ourselves back, feeling stuck, repeating patterns. I want to help you thrive. You might feel that you're not fully present in your day to day life. You might begin to experience increased feelings of distress about your state of being, a wish to change, a wish to enhance your skills in relationships, or an urge to expand your sense of potential. Maybe it's a wish to feel whole rather than a bundle of contradictions, a yearning for transcendence or for surrender of a sense of falseness to our lives.

Integrating contemporary
psychoanalytic
theory with other modalities including mindfulness, we will create a space to identify, connect with, and verbalize feelings, where you can be understood and feel empowered.
Therapy has the power to help you unlock your full potential. Many of the patterns, beliefs and behaviors that cause us to feel stuck in the present were once necessary tools for survival. Working interactively and collaboratively, I will help you understand your personal psychological barriers to living more effectively. My job is to understand you in order to help you empathically understand yourself, and make better choices suited to your needs. I'll work with you to efficiently achieve self-awareness, balance, and fortitude in all areas of your life, including work, relationships, spirituality, and community.

I incorporate CBT, DBT, ACT, and psychodynamic and
psychoanalytic
therapy, etc.
No matter this is the 1st or the 10th time that you are looking for a psychotherapist, it could still be nerve-wracking. I am here to walk alongside you on this journey. I am culturally sensitive and inclusive. I believe that our identities influence how we experience the world and how we present ourselves, but don't necessarily define us. To better understand how external factors influence us and how to better understand and accept ourselves are both essential in the personal growth and healing process. Psychotherapy is one of many ways of getting there.

My background in psychoanalysis, neuropsychology and education provides me with knowledge of
psychoanalytic
theory that is informed by an understanding of the relationship of brain to behavior.
My diverse practice reflects and serves the needs of my neighborhood. My style of practice is interpersonal/humanistic meaning that I try to take an open minded approach to psychotherapy. The work is an exploration of the nature of relationships and sources of anxiety leading to an understanding of moment-to-moment experience of self and others. This understanding may lead to meaningful change and to the emergence of choices which were not previously considered. I am respectful of individual needs and differences and consider social & cultural influences. Email is best: drscurtis@gmail.com.

I believe that supporting an individual’s emotional well-being is the primary force for positive growth. In therapy clients can safely explore thoughts and feelings in a way that creates space to see our patterns more clearly. I value the relationship and believe it is the foundation for the working through process to happiness and uncovering a sense of purpose and meaning in life. My understanding of therapy primarily draws from
psychoanalytic
perspectives but I also incorporate mindfulness and contemporary views on trauma in my work. Individuals might need different approaches and I do my best to meet you where you are at.

Things are rarely as bad as they seem when you're anxious, depressed, or when you find yourself in adverse circumstances. Often, a change of perspective can dramatically improve your outlook, increase motivation, curb excessive guilt and build healthy self-regard. By examining negative feelings, behaviors and habits of thought, you can develop insights that bring relief and improve all aspects of your life--love, work and play.

Experienced individual and couples therapist. Often times, people find that they experience unhappiness, anxiety, or repeated obstacles to getting what they want in relationships, work, or other areas of our lives. Through a cooperative, supportive relationship with the right therapist, you can learn how to cope with what the "universe" throws your way, and which of your own behaviors and conflicts are contributing to your unhappiness. By talking with someone you trust and feel comfortable with, I believe anyone can learn to know themselves better and to live more consciously and deliberately.

My advanced training in
Psychoanalytic
Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis informs my practice, and I strive to implement humor & authenticity to foster our connection.
I view therapy as an ongoing process of learning about oneself. Our interpersonal relationship allows for exploration, growth, understanding, insight, and ultimately change. I specialize in working with adult individuals who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, trauma, grief and loss, areas of self and identity, and the general frustration of feeling stuck or conflicted. Therapy is --and can be-- for everyone!

I have post-graduate training in
psychoanalytic
psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and adults.
People have an inherent capacity for growth and healing, however, there are times when we may become stuck or stagnant. As a therapist, my role is to facilitate a person’s natural trend toward development, building upon strengths and resolving internal or external obstacles to living a healthy and fulfilling life. In my work, I aim to create a supportive and accepting environment, tailored to the needs of each client. Understanding that the individual is the expert of their experience, I will take my cues from you in terms of how we work through your specific difficulties together.

There is hope! Life is a series of ups and downs, but when the downs seem to dominate, it is time to get emotional support. The good news is that challenges can be a catalyst to life-enhancing solutions. Chronic issues can lead to hopelessness, loneliness, and problems in family, romantic, and professional relationships. A crisis such as the death of a loved one, divorce, or other loss can be devastating. Whether the issue is acute or chronic, psychotherapy can make all the difference in the world. A therapeutic alliance can support emotional well-being and assist in the healing process.

I draw influence from
psychoanalytic
, trauma-informed and behavioral methods.
I work with my patients to understand their full self, honest emotions, and how to live in accordance with what they may need to thrive. I work dynamically on various goals and issues, such as developing healthy relationships, breaking unhealthy work patterns, addressing complicated family dynamics, and improving honest and effective communication. With compassionate listening and understanding I help my patients develop ways to manage and treat distressing challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief and trauma. I work to cultivate a space that is warm and empathetic, where my patients can feel safe, respected, and heard.

I work interactively and collaboratively, integrating contemporary
psychoanalytic
theory with other modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness.
Therapy offers profound ways of responding more effectively to life's challenges: understanding and managing mental health symptoms and developing healthier, more adaptive coping strategies when facing problems; tools for resolving difficulties and finding more fulfillment in relationships; the possibility of working through past and present trauma, grief and loss; and the opportunity to recognize how our thoughts, beliefs and behaviors affect our relationships to ourselves and others and how self-awareness creates the possibility of change and new experiences. I work with individual adults and adolescents, as well as couples.

Psychoanalytic
Psychotherapy Program at the William Alanson White Institute in 2019, and am currently a

Together, we can figure out why you do the things you do, what you are feeling and why, and close the gaps between the blank spots in understanding, feeling, and doing so that you can inhabit your life and your self more fully. My aim is to help you feel free enough to express all that is inside without judgment, inattention, or finality, so that you can experience yourself and your feelings, including joy, pain, and everything in between, with equanimity, curiosity, and increased aliveness.

I utilize an eclectic approach including Psychodynamic, Emotionally Focused Therapy (attachment theory), Mindfulness Parenting, DBT and
Psychoanalytic
methods.
I have been practicing for over 28 years as a couples, family and individual therapist, for children, adolescents and adults. My areas of specialty include relationships, how to manage conflicts, parenting teens, how to maintain intimacy and co-parent effectively, including the difficulties of dating, infidelity, divorce, sex and finances. Individual problems include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, history of trauma, infertility, and other personal issues. Early career work supervising therapists in a court based crisis unit led me to many decades of work with NYC teens and their families.

I have worked as a social worker in hospital settings and as a talk-psychotherapist in community mental health clinics and a
psychoanalytic
institute.
Have you tried therapy before, but found that it didn't quite work for you? Maybe you stayed with one therapist for too long and never saw the results you were looking for. Or maybe you found that "just talking" about your problems was not moving you toward the change you were hoping to make. If you are hungry for personal growth and willing to work at it, the breakthrough you're seeking is within reach. At Brooklyn Somatic Therapy, we integrate a mindfulness-based, experiential and somatic approach to psychotherapy.

Psychoanalytic Therapists
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
