My final area of focus is psychological trauma and
narcissistic
abuse.
My practice consists of helping my clients become more effective actors in their lives. In the service of these goals, I teach them how to become better critical thinkers, (working together on creating healthy beliefs about themselves, others, and their environments), providing the mental tools required for emotional regulation and a fulfilling life. Additionally, we work together on understanding the past and present sources of troublesome behaviors and reducing them; this approach is called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. And, I specialize in a form of CBT called Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), used to treat OCD.

Change can be intimidating. We develop methods of coping that, at one time, perhaps helped to survive, but now prevent us from ultimately thriving. This can manifest in our relationship patterns and our mood, causing disruption in work, love, family, friendships and a healthy identity. My approach to therapy is rooted in helping clients develop a deeper understanding of these patterns and effecting change and empowerment through insight, support, and challenging maladaptive beliefs.

Are you feeling sad, anxious, or overwhelmed? Do you feel disconnected from others and wish for relationships that are more solid and fulfilling? Do you struggle with difficulties in communication or experience feelings of being misunderstood? Have you experienced difficult events in the past that affect your current life? Whatever challenges currently bring you to consider therapy, I would like to work with you to alleviate distress, promote positive change, and form stronger relationships. I love the work I do and I feel privileged to see individuals, couples, and families grow, deepen understanding, and change through their experiences in therapy.

Most therapy approaches focus on understanding ourselves intellectually, thereby engaging the left side of our brain. Yet, sustainable change happens through whole-mind integration, where the body, brain, as well as relational field are parts of the healing process. Using a blend of Somatic Experiencing®, Trauma and Attachment Therapy, Depth Psychology, and Dream Analysis, Somatic Counseling offers the body and psyche the support needed to discharge, renegotiate and reorganize locked-in fight, flight and freeze responses that are stored in the nervous system. A process that is compassionate and respectful to your needs and rhythm.

If you feel hopeless, I will hold hope for you. If you feel helpless, I will remind you of how strong you are even if you don't feel strong in the moment. We all struggle to let go of our past, maybe an imperfect childhood or a traumatic romantic relationship. We all want a second chance to create the life we were supposed to have. Change is painful. And you may have to walk away from something, or someone, who no longer serves you.

Diane Vaillancourt - Psychotherapist
MA, Life, Coach
I specialize in helping my patients to explore and express their feelings to heal early trauma. I use PTSD techniques to work on traumatic experiences, Life Coaching to work on short/long term goals and Energy Healing to complete the healing process. I help my patients to identify triggers and resolve associated problems to move forward. I find that when early trauma or blockage is released, patients are better able to fulfill their desired dreams. When knowledge and experience is combined with genuine caring and genuine listening, the results can have extraordinary potential. I do Telehealth sessions: phone, Zoom & FaceTime.

My practice is varied, although the focus over the years has been the LGBTQ community. I also see singles, couples and families not identified as LGBTQ. My role is to be a supportive agent, assisting the client to explore their past and present and to be more open about conflicts that are causing stress. Together, we explore the clients family history, in order to develop a deeper understanding of their present patterns and relationships. Anxiety, low self-esteem, sexuality, work problems are all examined. As a parent who has adopted, I work with families and individuals around adoption/foster care issues.

I am here with you. Well, not yet. But when I’m with you, I’m with you. With you in your pain and loneliness, your sadness and anger, your joy, your surprise and inspiration. With you in your transition, your loss, your growth and transformation. Therapy with me is a creative process of exploration and discovery in the here and now. I believe that we have a boundless capacity to grow and change, to heal and become unstuck from self-denying, self-destructive ways of being. I also believe that your experience of being stuck is REAL; it’s not “all in your head” and you can’t “just snap out of it.” I know because I’ve been there.

Life transitions - from getting married, a new job, having children, or retirement - present us with new and unique challenges that we have to navigate. Oftentimes the challenges presented by these life transitions are informed by our experiences in navigating previous major life transitions. My approach to psychotherapy is to examine not only the current challenges but also any previous obstacles that we have faced in order to determine what interpersonal, internal, and skills-based needs may be getting in the way of successfully navigating the current situation.

Often times, we as individuals will struggle with our relationships with our families, employers, and even acquaintances. When dealing with everyday life we need to recognize how we can approach each individual differently. Personally I would like to address anger management techniques and manage stress and anxiety with individuals in their daily lives. Learning to control the trajectories in our lives and aim for healthy relationships with all individuals we encounter can maximize our relationships. My mission is to address cultural issues within our homes and co dependency.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists
What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.
How do therapists treat NPD?
By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.
Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?
Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.
How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?
It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
