I am a Licensed
Marriage
and Family Therapist with over a dacade of experience working with individuals, couples, and families. I make sure that all my time with clients feels genuine and personable. I find it a lot easier, and frankly more fun, when you can enjoy talking with your therapist, and the mental health work doesn’t feel like a chore. I primarily work from systemic theories, and incorporate solution-focused work into my practice. After a thorough exploration of presenting issues, I aim to set clear goals for therapy in the initial sessions. I find it is important to evolve solution attempts to get change started.

“There is no greater agony than bearing the untold story inside you.” - Maya Angelou. Each person’s story shapes them and a burden to carry alone that is relieved when met with empathy. I consider it an honor to be present with clients as they share their untold story, gain greater self-knowledge, and manifest the story that is yet to come. I come from a place of curiosity and non-judgement around each individual’s lived experience. I hope to create a warm, accepting space where you can be your authentic self, feel safe to express your uncensored thoughts and share both laughter and tears.

Hello, my name is Luther L. Turner, Jr., a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years experience working with adults, couples, adolescents, and children in treatment. It's my belief that psychotherapy is an invaluable tool in enriching one's life. Whether its
marital
problems, mental health issues , overcoming addictions, emotional conflicts, or individual concerns; psychotherapy is, in my view, the most effective tool in not only discovering the underlining dynamics, but also provide practical solutions, that addressing one's choices in life as one initiates that first step in achieving a more satisfying and rewarding life.

I also work with couples as they change the nature of their relationship, such as cohabitation,
marriage
/divorce, birth of a new baby, as well as exploring non-traditional relationships.
While therapy can sometimes remind us of pain we may have tried hard to push away, my hope is to help you access your intrinsic joy, creativity and compassion so you can connect to yourself and others in a more fulfilling way. I treat individuals and couples using an attachment-based perspective and help clients explore how early trauma necessitated adaptive coping strategies that can get in their way later in life.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
