In the field of social work for 42 years, I specialize in working individually with LGBTQ+ young people. While acquiring deeper insight into what makes you tick, putting that knowledge to work is key. Setting realistic, attainable goals is an indispensable part of the process. Psychoanalytic and relational theories inform my work, and I view the therapeutic relationship as the cornerstone of treatment.

Online Counseling for Men : Are you a man who feels stuck between anger and numbness? Stressed out and anxious? Maybe you've doubted going to therapy because it seems too strange. Do you wish something would change in your relationship, but you don't know what to do--or worried it might end? Or maybe you're the guy who's constantly the friend of every woman you'd actually like to date. Plus, COVID-19 has raised all these stresses to the nth power. For white guys, maybe you're also realizing how race and racism have played a role in your life. You're ready to take steps to undo harm--but it seems like there's no way out.

As a gay man and psychotherapist, I am in a unique position to understand and relate to the unique needs of the LGBTQ population.
My practice is varied, although the focus over the years has been the LGBTQ community. I also see singles, couples and families not identified as LGBTQ. My role is to be a supportive agent, assisting the client to explore their past and present and to be more open about conflicts that are causing stress. Together, we explore the clients family history, in order to develop a deeper understanding of their present patterns and relationships. Anxiety, low self-esteem, sexuality, work problems are all examined. As a parent who has adopted, I work with families and individuals around adoption/foster care issues.

As one of the very first psychologists in New York City to have practiced as an openly gay man , I believe that I am very sensitive to the questions so many of us face concerning self-esteem and viability.
I am known to have a warm, yet direct style when practicing, and often utilize humor to help create a relaxed atmosphere. I believe that through exploration of one's personality and relationships with others, people are able to overcome obstructions to their development.

I understand that many men have issues with confronting mental health issues, and often times it can be difficult for men or women to seek change.
Often times, we as individuals will struggle with our relationships with our families, employers, and even acquaintances. When dealing with everyday life we need to recognize how we can approach each individual differently. Personally I would like to address anger management techniques and manage stress and anxiety with individuals in their daily lives. Learning to control the trajectories in our lives and aim for healthy relationships with all individuals we encounter can maximize our relationships. My mission is to address cultural issues within our homes and co dependency.

I believe that psychotherapy lays the emotional groundwork that leads to a more satisfying and engaged life. Many people mistakenly think of psychotherapy as one-sided: the person in therapy talks and the therapist listens. But effective psychotherapy - therapy that heals - works because of the unique relationship that develops between the therapist and the person in therapy. I provide an environment - safe and non-judgemental - that facilitates opening up in new and often unexpected ways and helps you experience and express deepest thoughts and feelings. I have particular experience working with gay men , HIV issues, substance abuse and sexual addiction.

I welcome clients of all backgrounds and identities with a focus on working with the LGBT community, specifically gay men and trans folks at all stages of their personal/ sexual identity exploration. When we work together you can expect to see a mix of the following: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to challenge negative automatic thoughts, good for anxiety and depression. A psychodynamic approach which looks at family development, past and present relationships. Or Gestalt/ parts work, which could take the form of role plays with others, or conversations with our childhood selves.

I specialize in working with anxiety/depression, relationship issues, trauma and PTSD, and toxic masculinity (Both for men & others who have been subject to it).
I have found that personal growth is best cultivated when we lean into support from trusted others. Therapy can be a place to connect with a reliable support figure that can assist you in navigating difficulties differently. As a therapist, I believe in the power of the therapeutic alliance. Together we can discover (or reinforce) helpful approaches used to address your desired areas of growth. Empathy, autonomy, and accountability are values I center to empower you to nurture your mental health and relationship goals. We can work together to take what is realized in therapy, and apply it to your real life.

How can I find a therapist in Brooklyn?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
