I work primarily with families, adolescents, children, and young adults who have had very difficult experiences and need a safe, playful, and steady partner to explore the impact of these events on their lives. As an out queer clinician I also work regularly with LGBTQIA+ clients who seek a therapist aware of the complexity of those identities in the world, as well as with parents looking to better develop skills to support trans or queer-identified children. I recognize racism and white supremacy as forms of social oppression that provoke traumatic responses and work accordingly with clients who have been harmed by these systems.

Therapy can look and feel very different with each provider. You or your child may have seen therapists in the past who were not able to make a meaningful connection. Or maybe your child has never seen a therapist. At Brooklyn Child Therapy, we work to first build a strong, trusting, empathetic relationship. BCT's goal is to support you and your child by providing a safe space to explore emotions and life experiences, and to practice useful thinking and behavioral strategies. Neurodivergence is welcome and celebrated.

Are you a driven professional in your 20s or 30s struggling to find balance between your career and your personal life? Maybe it's hard to stand up for yourself at work, or you find yourself working longer and harder than you want to. You might feel like you are always putting out fires at work but never making time for what really matters. You may notice that you put so much energy into work that your own well-being or important relationships sometimes get neglected. You may want to think about work less when you're off the clock and be more present with the people you care about.

My goal in working with you is to provide a safe/non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable sharing the issues that bother you. Life has a way of bringing us challenges that we are not always prepared for. It might be related to a medical condition, issues with family, or the loss of a loved one. Sometimes it is related to trying to be comfortable in the life we have built for ourselves and the expectations of the community we live in. We will work together to identify your personal goals and strengths as you develop a plan to manage these life issues.

We all experience things that can be difficult to talk about - trauma, loss, self-doubt, substance use, or shame - things that have happened to us and/or things that we don’t like about ourselves. I specialize in approaching those things that can be hard to talk about. My goal as a therapist is to offer a non-judgemental and safe space to explore those areas of your life, so that you can feel less alone and find strategies to move forward. We will recognize and build on the strengths that you already have, while developing new strategies to help you move forward.

As a born-and-raised Brooklynite, I love the city that never sleeps and the diverse residents of it. People who gravitate toward working with me tend to be people with spiritual backgrounds seeking answers and willing to do the work of therapy. You may be a perfectionist, be high-achieving, and have big expectations of yourself. This has led you to feel like you don’t know yourself, like you never fit in, like you’re a failure. We can work together to gain clarity on identity and values, learn how the past affects the present, and choose healthier thoughts. In sessions, you can be vulnerable; therapy is safe and judgment-free.

As Black men a lot of us have been socialized in ways that makes maintaining deep relationships a challenge. Whether the cause is unresolved trauma, communication skills with room for improvement, socialization of our masculinity or anything else, allowing the issue to go unresolved creates tension where there could be harmony. A lot of us developed defenses for remaining safe in a world we feel isn’t safe for us. We also develop dynamics in our relationships where we may continue deploying defenses in safe spaces, preventing ourselves from receiving love and loving to our fullest capacity.

I work with high-functioning adults—often Black men and professionals—who are navigating the pressures of life, identity, and career. As a Black male therapist, I understand the unique challenges my clients face in balancing personal goals, identity, and societal expectations. Many appear strong, but struggle with anxiety, relationship stress, past anger issues, and the pressure to build wealth. Therapy with me provides a space to address these challenges, build trust, and make real change, without losing who they truly are.

Life throws us more than a few curveballs amid all the twisting and turning in our journey. Because we are all human, we can feel discouraged at some point, but there is no shame in feeling that way.

Everyone goes through periods in their lives when they feel stuck with work and/or love. They can feel overwhelmed about the choices they have to make or feel forsaken by the perceived lack of opportunities. During these stressful times, they often lose their center, their sense of being grounded, and forget about the importance of personal care.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
