You’re a young woman of color who seems strong and capable on the outside but feels overwhelmed on the inside. Anxiety shows up as spiraling thoughts, tension in your body, and constant pressure to perform. You may worry about your health, work, and relationships, and feel like no one truly sees or understands what you’re going through. You want relief, clarity, and a safe space where your experiences are validated and you can feel grounded and more in control.

You are emotionally intelligent and self-aware. Yet, you're confused and frustrated as to why the same personal and/or professional barriers keep showing up. You know you need to do something different, you WANT change so much, and will do whatever it takes to build new patterns. It's easy to feel defeated when you want change so badly but don't know where to start. You are not alone. It’s healthy to want more and a sign of self-love to be ready to fight for yourself. Aimee Barr & Associates uses an interactive and holistic approach to understand your full psychological journey. You are unique, your treatment should be too.

Are you part of an interracial, intercultural, or queer relationship where partners may have different identities and conflicts keep resurfacing—often shaped by culture, family, and power dynamics? Many of the couples I work with are immigrants, children of immigrants, or queer people of color who feel misunderstood, stuck in patterns, or pressured to minimize their needs. You may be a high achiever or caretaker who hides your feelings, or someone who’s been told you’re “too much” when you speak your truth.

I work with individuals, couples, and groups. I help people identify and eliminate beliefs and perspectives that prevent them from living with love, confidence, and enthusiasm. Anxiety is reduced by identifying causes and applying mindful, body-present skills. Depression is lifted through expression and removing draining blocks that prevent action. Relationships are improved by focusing on communication and eliminating blame, resentment, and individual defenses that block deep intimacy. The more we know about ourselves, the more we're able to let go of old patterns and make decisions that lead to a more joyful and fulfilling life.

My ideal client is ready to heal and grow. They're likely struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, or people-pleasing, feeling disconnected from themselves despite their capabilities. They seek a safe space to understand the root of their struggles and feel more in control of their life and emotions. Ultimately, they want to move beyond just surviving and start truly thriving, building more authentic connections with themselves and others.

Psychotherapy offers the space to pause and reflect, which in turn gives us the chance to disrupt patterns which may be causing us distress. In my practice, I have a particular emphasis on exploring how trauma and developmental experiences impact relationships, family dynamics, how we experience ourselves, and our ability to create a fulfilling life. I additionally am experienced working with individuals with a range of medical illnesses – including addressing difficulties related to medical trauma, managing chronic illness, and supporting patients as they navigate decisions around treatment and quality of life.

What are the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves? Where do we learn them? Therapy is a great place to start creating new stories that are more aligned with your values and desires. I believe that healing happens in the relationship and approach therapy as a creative, collaborative experience where humor, kindness, and self-expression are valued and encouraged. My areas of expertise include working with young people who have experienced trauma and family conflict, though I work with individuals of all ages to help them manage the stressors of life and achieve greater self-awareness, acceptance, and meaning.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
