I am a licensed psychologist (NYS 025287) with training at Zucker Hillside Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital working with both adults and older adults in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Life transitions - from getting married, a new job, having children, or retirement - present us with new and unique challenges that we have to navigate. Oftentimes the challenges presented by these life transitions are informed by our experiences in navigating previous major life transitions. My approach to psychotherapy is to examine not only the current challenges but also any previous obstacles that we have faced in order to determine what interpersonal, internal, and skills-based needs may be getting in the way of successfully navigating the current situation.

My strengths as a therapist lie in my decades of experience as a researcher in the field of psychology, particularly in issues concerning aging and caregiving for older adults.
Caregiving for a loved one as they face the challenges of aging can be rewarding, but also tiring. If you find that you're putting yourself last, having trouble sleeping, having difficulty concentrating, or feeling overwhelmed, you may be experiencing caregiver burnout. Fortunately, I'm here to help you through your journey as a caregiver. Together, we can bring a sense of control back to your life as you tackle this role. We can work on building a self-care routine, learning when and how to ask for help, and how to cope with the stresses that caregivers commonly face.

I use a variety of therapeutic interventions rooted in Psychodynamic therapy, which emphasises exploring early relationships and experiences and making connections with patterns and behaviours in your life today.

Life changes can be painful.Through exploration of feelings, symptoms and behavior, I help patients to gain insight into the root of their problems, then we set realistic goals. My clinical practice includes cognitive behavior, insight oriented, reality oriented therapy, family and marriage counseling. I also have special certification in treating anxiety and eating disorders. My experience has also helped me to realize that the number of patients with age-related cognitive, mood and memory problems is also growing and many of them remain under-diagnosed and under-treated. Integrating memory-enhancing strategies and behavioral modifications into individual therapy for seniors leads to tangible results.

Each of us is unique. In all the billions of years on this earth, there will never be another living person exactly like you. How are you handling the opportunities, challenges, crises and paradoxes of your one and only human life? How do you feel loved and valued? Connected to others? Secure? What provides you with a sense of creativity, meaning and purpose? As a therapist, I view my role as a catalyst to help reduce the inner obstacles to psychic growth and development. I want to reduce feelings of inadequacy, fear, sadness, shame and depression. I want to help you feel kinder towards both yourself and others.

My experience as a cognitive neuroscientist working with older patients and those with different illnesses has also given me a deep understanding of the effects of disease on how we feel about ourselves and the effect on family and friends.
My goal in working with you is to provide a safe/non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable sharing the issues that bother you. Life has a way of bringing us challenges that we are not always prepared for. It might be related to a medical condition, issues with family, or the loss of a loved one. Sometimes it is related to trying to be comfortable in the life we have built for ourselves and the expectations of the community we live in. We will work together to identify your personal goals and strengths as you develop a plan to manage these life issues.

I am an eclectic in many ways and sort of Jungian which gives therapy a spiritual dimension. I am not Freudian but hold his approach with respect. Over the years, I gained much experience with various types of populations: cancer and AIDS patients, substance abuse clients, personality disorders clients, to someone with anxiety and low mood concerns. I worked with young adults and older clients, together finding a good match for each one. I plan on seeing clients on weekend

Geriatric and Seniors Therapists
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, dementia, and physical mobility challenges.
How can geriatric therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.
How is counseling for elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
Many aspects of geriatric counseling are similar to counseling in younger age groups; in general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. However, therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.
Can geriatric counseling help people who suffer from dementia?
Counseling can be highly effective for aging adults with dementia. While some therapists specializing in dementia may work with clients solely on topics surrounding memory loss, they can also assist clients with conditions that may co-occur at old age, such as anxiety or depression. Counselors specializing in working with older adults can also offer an objective assessment of a client’s functioning or disease progression to caregivers, and they may be particularly knowledgeable about community resources that may benefit dementia clients and their families. Therapists specializing in dementia may also be trained in specialized forms of therapy for memory-loss|memory loss, such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)—which can help mentally stimulate dementia clients to preserve cognitive functioning.
