You deserve to live a life with joy, ease and confidence. Perhaps you have been in therapy before or this is your first time. Therapy doesn't have to be a one-sided relationship where you're mulling over your entire life's history and all of the pain! In fact, it can be an enjoyable process; a full, engaging relationship with humor, intellect, creativity, spark and curiosity. I'm a real person in the room with you. Together, we will explore solutions and new ways of thinking, feeling and acting. I want you to get the results you want, to find purpose and meaning in your relationships, work and any other life areas.

Navigating the world can be tough when you consistently try to please others, have difficulty making decisions, or fear speaking your mind. I work with individuals who are often marginalized, and exhausted by their unhealthy relationships with self and others. Often when we attempt to live differently, negative emotions will kick in that cause us to cling to our old ways. I know all too well how difficult it is to feel overwhelmed or trapped by your circumstances. Together we'll push back on negative self talk, poor boundaries, self sabotage, and other unhelpful patterns that may be limiting life choices.

, anxiety, depression, cultural identity, trauma, and substance abuse.
Whatever it is that brings you to therapy, I stand by the commitment, “I’m here with you.” I believe that each of our stories are equally sacred as they are unique and see therapy as an opportunity to cultivate curiosity for ourselves and to let go of self-judgement. Taking a Psychodynamic approach, I aim to help my clients unravel, experience, and understand themselves more deeply, through building awareness, flexibility, and the capacity to make change. Humor, authenticity, and the willingness to experiment is foundational to my approach.

Have you ever wondered why people in different areas of your life treat you the same way? Have you ever wondered why you are never included in the fun, or always expected to be the one to put the plans together for everyone else? Do you sometimes think that everyone is judging you or do you spend countless hours in your head judging yourself? Do you take pride in your perfectionism and yet procrastinate for hours on end? Do you ever wonder why that is? If you have ever had a thought similar to these or felt anxious or depressed because of situations like these, maybe its time to talk?

I have experience working with clients who are working through issues related to relationships,
codependency
, grief, past and present trauma, anxiety, stress, spirituality, self-esteem, and emotional regulation.
Therapy is a powerful tool in the process of inviting our most authentic selves to emerge. My approach is grounded in an integrative blend of Eastern and Western philosophies with the goal of fostering a greater connection between the mind, body, and spirit. In sessions, we will bring awareness to the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors through the implementation of mindfulness and meditative practices to better understand the blockages that are preventing you from living a fully expressed life. I provide a compassionate and safe container to work towards healing past wounds while addressing present problems.

Are you in 'Survival Mode?' Do you find yourself replaying memories that make you feel scared, anxious or uncomfortable in your body? PTSD, anxiety, phobias, and
codependency
in relationships can be manifestations of our past dictating our present experience. Fortunately, just as our body knows how to heal from a paper-cut, our brain knows how to heal from our past. Trauma-informed techniques allow us to keep the knowledge of the past while loosing any pain or negative beliefs associated with those memories.

I work with individual adults and couples; I am happy to offer in person sessions in Park Slope as well as virtual sessions in New York State. I specialize in treating people-pleasing and codependent patterns in relationships. You may have needed people-pleasing at a time in your life, but find it is no longer working now. People struggling with
codependency
typically have a history of trauma, abuse, neglect or other painful experiences. Even if no longer in those situations, you may experience deep loneliness from hiding yourself, resentment, physical aches and pains, substance use or perfectionism.

We are able to provide support and psychoeducation for many problems, but especially in the areas of trauma, life-change events, communication, and
codependency
.
Greenpoint Psychotherapy is a holistically minded practice that functions on the premise that by allowing ourselves to accept and experience our emotions, we will increase assertive behavior leading to increased alignment between external & inner selves. We help clients with exploring how their past relationships and experiences continue to impact their present life, through identifying and changing thought patterns that have become unnecessarily negative or rigid, and learning to use difficult experiences to gain more insight about themselves so they are able to move forward with kindness instead of fear.

What therapy types help with codependency problems?
Both couples and family therapy and cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) can help with the relationship difficulties referred to as codependency. Such problems typically include inappropriate feelings of responsibility for a loved one’s destructive behavior, irrational patterns of thinking about such behavior, and family interaction patterns in which the needs of one troubled member override the needs of others in a household.
What happens in therapy for codependency?
Spouses and family members learn and practice how to interact and support each other in a healthy way without sacrificing their own needs or well-being. They learn the limits of their responsibility for their loved ones and correct faulty patterns of thinking and feeling that underlie codependent behavior. Individuals may be encouraged to nurture an array of social relationships and to cultivate their own talents and interests so that they develop a healthy sense of self outside the family.
How does therapy help a person or couple overcome codependency?
Therapy helps people establish healthy ways of being in a relationship. Spouses and family members learn how to nurture and support one another without sacrificing their own needs or allowing the needs of one person to dominate the dynamic. Individuals learn how to say no and set boundaries, and how to maintain their own identity and self-esteem. Therapy helps people understand that they are not responsible for the feelings and actions of others. It also helps individuals deal with the turbulence that can come from living with a person suffering from such conditions as substance abuse and mental illness.
What is the goal of therapy for codependency?
One goal of therapy for codependency is to alleviate feelings of responsibility for and correct irrational patterns of thinking about loved ones whose behavioral problems override the needs of others in a household. Therapy helps people establish healthy boundaries of behavior and speak up for their own needs in a relationship. In addition, people learn how to maintain a healthy relationship, one in which both parties give and receive equally and are able to retain their own identity.
