No longer recognize the child in your home? Do you want your child back? If you want to regain a sense of love, peace, respect and stability within your home, I am here to assist you! Families typically begin their greatest challenges during the youth’s adolescent years. Adolescents can present with a myriad of challenges (i.e.: mental health, social, familial). Parents can then struggle to communicate effectively with their youth leading to increased stress and family conflict. Ultimately, both are seeking understanding, stability, and peace.

In addition to working with adults, I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents.
Through both my psychoanalytic training and my training as a creative arts therapist, I treat each person as an individual and we come up with a treatment plan together. My patients are often dealing with depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, identity formation, trauma, and attachment issues. My view of therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to help you increase your self-esteem, have a greater understanding of yourself, and be able to have healthy and long-lasting friendships and romantic relationships.

I received my Social Work degree in 1997 and spent many years working in hospitals. I worked in psychiatry, pediatrics, medicine, and the emergency department of a level one trauma center. Many patients I saw in the Emergency Department were victims of severe trauma, including sexual assault and domestic violence. In addition to my Social Work license, I am Licensed in Education, and have many years of training in Applied Behavior Analysis. I have worked with children as a school counselor and educator. Much of my experience has been with autistic children and their families to provide support for the many challenges they face.

I understand that it isn't easy to reach out for help for yourself or your child , but I'm here to make sure therapy is helpful for both of you.
I'm an LCSW practicing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and my office is conveniently located three blocks from the Bedford L stop. I'm psychodynamically oriented, and I specialize in anxiety, play therapy, trauma, and attachment. I enjoy helping families to strengthen relationships. Play is a child 's natural way of communicating, and thus is the perfect tool for therapy with young children . I often work with older children , teens, and adults as well, and tailor my therapeutic approach to the needs of each person I work with.

I work with families and children and am experienced in play therapy.
Many clients come to therapy because they’ve reached a roadblock in their lives. I work with each person together, to help go beyond that impasse. Sometimes, it is helping to clarify and act on goals. Other times, there may be the need to understand one’s past before formulating a plan. A client who feels their therapist is there to work together and support their decisions, is more likely to achieve their goals. I work actively with each client to help them reach a happier place.

Life can be painful and complicated at times, and so often we react instead of respond to stress. Whether you are an adult, teen, or child , emotions can be complex to navigate and difficult to manage alone. My goal is to support you through difficult moments, help you build awareness and understanding for your behaviors and feelings, gain clarity in confusing times, better understand your relationships, and ultimately help you see life in clearer terms. As a collaborator on this journey, I aim to provide a nurturing and safe environment so that you may explore your internal nature and grow in all the ways you desire.

I am providing online creative arts therapy and talk therapy sessions to children , adolescents, and adults and will be doing so at sliding scale rates.
Finding a therapist that is the right fit for you is a crucial first step to a successful therapeutic experience. My approach to therapy is client-centered, meaning that I will work collaboratively with you to tune into your struggles, explore new and creative ways to cope, and strengthen your ability to manage your emotional experiences. I believe in using art in conjunction to traditional talk based therapy, as I have seen it provides an alternative way of expressing oneself for children , adolescents, young adults, geriatric clients, and on an inpatient psychiatric unit.

In addition to working with adults, I specialize in play therapy with children and the treatment of adolescents.
It is a privilege to be a therapist because patients entrust you with closely held and often pained parts of themselves, along with parts of themselves they are excited about and proud of. I see our work as the creation of a place where these different parts of the patient's self can come into the room and be acknowledged and recognized. Therapy is also a place where you, as the patient, can use my listening ear to help you withstand pain and anxiety. Please see my website: zanjacobusinsightpsychotherapy.com

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
