My clients often struggle with relationship issues stemming from early childhood trauma; this results in coping mechanisms that work, but may carry a big price tag. They may grapple with
sexual abuse
, partner violence, sexual orientation and/ or disability related issues. Often, these manifest as substance abuse, cutting, communication problems or self- isolating behaviors. They may have friends and family members who do not truly "see" them, and as a result their own view of self is dim. Other clients are coping with situational anxiety and depression related to Covid, and need to establish safety, structure and hope.

In addition to trauma, I work with a range of other issues including codependency,
sexual abuse
, anxiety, depression, as well as transgender issues.
All of my clients want their lives back and we make that happen together. Foundational to my practice is the belief that relationships are central in both our wounding and healing. Through providing a safe environment grounded in equity, mutual respect, and a sense of shared purpose, together we will work to support you in your journey towards greater growth and self-discovery. You are the expert in your life, and I am here to meet you where you are and walk alongside you in your process. I am an EMDR trained therapist who utilizes a wide range of evidence-based techniques to help my clients solve problems.

I have experience working with trauma symptoms that originate from childhood
sexual abuse
, sexual
assault
, physical and emotional abuse and neglect, as well as coping with addiction, life transitions, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
Our symptoms and discomforting experiences express what has happened to us in the past. In my clinical work, I aspire to help clients tolerate and be present moment to moment, using the body and the felt senses as entry points to habits of thought, feelings, and behaviors that stand as barriers to living an engaged life. All aspects of experience are invited into the therapy room, and working with what arises we seek antidotes and tools to reduce suffering and open up new possibilities. A deep mutuality, collaboration, creativity, and surprise are what I absolutely love about the therapeutic relationship.

I have specialized, extensive experience working with trauma, including healthcare workers, interpersonal violence, sexual
assault
, and military combat.
Here is how I see it- every one of us has encountered unique challenges in our lives that have led us to how we are feeling and functioning in this moment. Often times, these challenges lead us to be harsh, inflexible, and unforgiving to ourselves, resulting in unwanted consequences in our relationships with ourselves, others, our work, and our families. My goal with clients is to help you gain knowledge, skills, and compassion as we explore these challenges and find new ways for you to relate to yourself and the world.

Prior to that, I treated survivors of sexual
assault
and intimate partner violence in an outpatient hospital setting.
As a psychotherapist and licensed social worker, I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where clients will feel comfortable opening up to new and different ways of seeing themselves, their stories and their potential for growth and change. My primary approach to therapy is psychodynamic. I am currently receiving advanced training in this approach through a two-year program at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy. I also make use of other modalities, including cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness and other techniques to meet clients' individual needs.

Therapy is not about fixing you as if you're some broken thing. To me, it's about recovering from suffering, and connecting deeply and authentically to yourself, allowing for your thoughts, feelings, desires and dreams. It can be difficult to begin a new therapy relationship and be vulnerable, especially when relationships have been harmful in the past. I think taking the risk anyway reflects an inherent pull toward repairing the old wounds that restrict our capacity to live freely and joyfully. I love working with LGBTQIA folks, relationships, trauma and abuse, and difficulties with shame, self-love and acceptance.

Using a holistic approach to therapy, I work with clients to enhance their emotional, physical, and spiritual wellness. I am an active, yet non-judgemental, participant in sessions and assist individuals in accessing emotional freedom. Drawing from various therapeutic modalities I assist clients in untangling old stories and building a healthier frame of reference from which to live a fulfilled life with greater emotional health and wellness. When we become depressed and anxious we often lose track of what originally inspired us. Reconnecting to purpose can have a wonderful effect on our mental health.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
