Sessions may include traditional
psychodynamic
techniques with a focus on the unconscious and childhood, somatic methods such as mindfulness and meditation, and parts work based on Internal Family Systems.
Some people come to therapy knowing exactly what they want to work on. Others have a more vague sense that something in their lives is wrong. Both motivations can be an incredible opportunity to learn more about oneself and figure out how to build a more authentic and fulfilling life. I work with clients who may experience anxiety, depression, or the effects of trauma. I also assist clients in identifying and breaking outside of societal norms to figure out their true personal and interpersonal needs. With couples, I use a variety of methods to help build stronger relationships.

In addition to utilizing
psychodynamic
/psychoanalytic and relational perspectives to explore and make sense of our inner worlds, I am committed to investigating and helping to make reparative use of the ways race, racism, ethnicity, class, sexuality and gender inform our senses of self and other, and have created traumatized spaces in our brains and bodies.
Together, we can figure out why you do the things you do, what you are feeling and why, and close the gaps between the blank spots in understanding, feeling, and doing so that you can inhabit your life and your self more fully. My aim is to help you feel free enough to express all that is inside without judgment, inattention, or finality, so that you can experience yourself and your feelings, including joy, pain, and everything in between, with equanimity, curiosity, and increased aliveness.

I am a seasoned clinician based in Brooklyn with a background in relational, attachment based psychotherapy. A
psychodynamic
approach will help us identify what's under the surface to tackle old habits, default behaviors, cognitive distortions that can cause symptoms like anxiety or depression. Trauma can be debilitating until you learn strategies to weaken its hold. Therapy is a partnership to strengthen your sense of self, create sustainable skills to cope with stressors, feel effective in meeting your own needs. I utilize a wide variety of therapeutic approaches, adapted specifically for you including CBT and EMDR.

My work is trauma-informed, drawing on
psychodynamic
, cognitive behavioral and compassion-focused therapy techniques.
Stress, sadness, grief, disappointment and self-doubt: as humans we all face these painful experiences. But when the feelings become too big to manage, disruptive to relationships and daily life, you don’t have to struggle with them on your own. Maybe you’ve tried to ignore or suppress uncomfortable thoughts, but that can actually make things worse, leading to anxiety and depression. I aim to help clients build the capacity to explore, tolerate and navigate distress, and to learn to move through difficult moments with more ease. We can’t make negative emotions disappear, but we can work together to lessen their impact on your life.

Though I have postgraduate training in
psychodynamic
therapy, I incorporate short-term modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) when appropriate.
I work with children, adolescents and adults who may be facing stressful circumstances, life transitions or conflicted relationships. My approach is eclectic and collaborative, drawing from various therapeutic approaches based on the specific needs of the client. My goal is to provide an environment of safety and trust in which patterns and conflicts can be openly explored in order to increase self awareness, decrease anxiety and depression and improve one's overall sense of well-being.

Welcome to my practice! I hope you will find the following information useful in sparking your curiosity about therapy and determining if I would be a good fit to work with you or your child.
The counseling I provide can be described as
psychodynamic
, developmental psychotherapy which aims to uncover the truth about who you really are. In short, psychotherapy teaches the client to be honest.
"
Psychodynamic
" refers to the internal motivation behind emotions, thoughts and actions. "Developmental" refers to our drive to grow and develop. Insight is the major curative factor because behaving authentically promotes emotional healing.

While I have been trained in
psychodynamic
psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, I have also studied CBT, EMDR, trauma related therapies, meditation, yoga, art therapy, and other modalities.
I assist in helping each individual work through whatever may have brought them into therapy so that they can find their own internal potential and ability to better cope with stressful situations. I specialize in working with individuals dealing with depression, anxiety and panic related disorders, PTSD, relationship struggles, bereavement, and work related issues. I believe that therapy offers the individual a safe space to share their struggles and work on ways to resolve these difficulties with the support and assistance of the therapist.

No one seeks therapy because they feel their life is going well. However, seeking therapy is a sign that things are actually going right! Deeply, intimately, and passionately knowing yourself is the key to happiness and I want to help you achieve that. Knowledge is power and with that power you can make decisions to change. You can achieve acess to parts of yourself that can make you feel alive and in love with life. I am excited to help you do that.

I combine relational,
psychodynamic
and cognitive behavioral approaches in my practice and have helped many people struggling with a range of issues, including: depression, stress and anxiety, relationship and intimacy issues, life transitions, family and career challenges, self-esteem, loss and grief, illness, substance abuse, and many forms of trauma.
As a psychotherapist, I have found that cultivating a genuinely curious and accepting relationship with oneself is essential for growth. Effective therapy facilitates this investigation; I am dedicated to helping people find greater fulfillment and success in their pursuits, develop more satisfying relationships, alleviate distressing symptoms, and discover comfort and confidence with themselves. Together, our work will address the barriers, behaviors, and past issues that inhibit change, in order to improve present day problems and symptoms and help you more fully inhabit your strengths.

I’m trained in
psychodynamic
as well as cognitive/behavioral modalities and adapt, with you, my therapeutic interventions according to where you are in the process toward a better sense of wellbeing.
You are you, and nobody understands this as deeply as you. I approach our work from a humanistic, person-centered foundation that helps guide your innate strengths to discover, or re-discover, your authentic self. For some, therapy might look like a winding journey, for others, a direct path. Or it may be a mixture of both. I’m a relational therapist and believe that the fostering of a trusting alliance between us is essential to the realization of your unique goals of change and growth.

Life can be overwhelming at times. Therapy can help slow things down and allow your day-to-day experiences to feel more manageable. Therapy is also a deeply personal process, and we understand how important it is for clients to feel comfortable and connected with their therapist. An advantage of group practice is the ability to easily transition if the fit isn't quite right. Our therapists are warm, empathic, and knowledgeable, with a commitment to providing compassionate, sensitive, inclusive care for all.

I utilize an eclectic approach including
Psychodynamic
, Emotionally Focused Therapy (attachment theory), Mindfulness Parenting, DBT and Psychoanalytic methods.
I have been practicing for over 28 years as a couples, family and individual therapist, for children, adolescents and adults. My areas of specialty include relationships, how to manage conflicts, parenting teens, how to maintain intimacy and co-parent effectively, including the difficulties of dating, infidelity, divorce, sex and finances. Individual problems include depression, anxiety, panic attacks, history of trauma, infertility, and other personal issues. Early career work supervising therapists in a court based crisis unit led me to many decades of work with NYC teens and their families.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
