I have come to accept that the very thing that causes pain in our lives can be the opportunity for transformation and joy. Death , divorce, loss of employment, and now with Covid-19, are unavoidable human traumas. We simply can not defeat these losses. What we can do is bravely embrace our frailty and slowly discover our inherent well-being and resiliency. Through a trusting therapeutic relationship, you can begin to mend the fragments and feel the soft strength within you.

Having experienced the loss of a loved one can feel isolating.
Many of my clients describe losing a loved one was like being hit by a Mac truck. There is something unbelievable about how a loved one is no longer with us ;it is akin to a sudden shock. The need to tell one's story and organize the narrative is essential to the process of healing. Repeating the story in front of witnesses either in a group setting or individually helps integrate this new reality into one's frame of reference. The purpose of the sessions individual or group in to help to make you feel less alone in your personal tragedy. Repeatedly group members report a sense of healing being connected to others.

I provide talk therapy and specialize in women’s issues, loss and grief , anxiety, depression and trauma, family work, and adolescent development.
I have always been the person people come to talk to and my practice is a natural extension of myself. I strive to develop a trusting and comfortable clinical relationship with all my clients, where they process their various challenges, life changes, pains, uncertainties, and family dynamics. Thirty years of practice have taught me how incredibly resilient the most struggling individual can be given the genuine support of others and even without it. Building from my clients’ resilience and our clinical relationship, treatment evolves and mental health is found, strengthened, or regained.

The world is a crazy, busy, complicated & overwhelming place these days. You’re managing the stress of career, family, health, and relationships on autopilot — wash, rinse, repeat. You’ve got little to no time to think about your own needs and tend to put everyone else first. You’re adjusting to a major life change or loss but barely have a moment to breathe, let alone process or make sense of it all. If you're a young professional, new parent, are managing a new or chronic health concern, are coping with a significant change, or just identify as a serial "overthinker," I can help you find more balance, and in turn, find your voice.

Life transitions can often cause us to feel overwhelmed. While people close to us may be supportive, we may not always feel able to share with them our doubts and discomfort. Having an empathic therapist who can objectively help us navigate the journey is invaluable. My work with clients who have struggled with depression and anxiety, survived trauma or grief , or experience the world as LGBTQ+ identified people is strengths-based, person-centered, and results-oriented.

This has familiarized me with a variety of family crises, including loss .
Let's work it out together. Most of us struggle from time to time with relationship questions, parenting conundrums, career decisions or even the loss of someone or something of great significance to us. Over the years, I've come to respect the value of sharing these struggles with a sensitive professional. I am here to help you explore how better to manage the obstacles that stand in your way. Working with individuals, couples, families and groups, I enjoy helping people come to a better understanding of how to work through the challenges in their lives.

Therapy is the start of a rewarding and challenging intimate relationship with a complete stranger (me!). We will start by working to understand your current concerns as it relates to your history and family of origin. Then we work to uncover and explore patterns of thinking and behaviors, and identify ways to tolerate or change difficult emotions, while strengthening coping skills. I utilize different modalities including psychodynamics, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Complicated Grief , and positive and attachment-based lenses to support people going through anxiety, life transitions, grief , and relationship challenges.

In particular, I specialize in helping people overcome depression and anxiety, change repeated unproductive behaviors, cope with medical problems, overcome addiction, cope with grief / loss and improve their relationships with others (including couples therapy).
I see psychotherapy as a dialogue between two people that can yield great personal growth and transformation. I aim to promote a safe, supportive and trusting psychotherapeutic relationship that facilitates the exploration of areas of difficulty, hurt, and vulnerability. My patients typically gain the following from our work together: insights into their own unproductive behaviors, new perspectives, increased confidence and self acceptance. I work collaboratively with my patients. I ask probing questions and point out inconsistencies. I also provide feedback, advice, insights, observations and opinions.

I specialize in treating people who are experiencing relationship issues, sadness, chronic or acute illness, body troubles, sexual concerns, bereavement , and trauma.
The most important thing in a therapeutic relationship is the match. Everyone wants to find a therapist who 'gets' them. I believe that therapy really works, and that finding the right person can be life-changing. As a therapist, I believe it is important to respect the choices that people make in their lives, and to listen openly and non-judgmentally. We all make choices that may not make sense to our friends and family. Therapy is useful for helping us to understand the reasoning behind the decisions we've made, and for facilitating change in our lives.

I specialize in loss , trauma, family/relationship issues with children, adolescents and adults, in English or Spanish. I use integrative, strengths-focused, evidenced-based therapy. This means I believe that humans are inherently wired for resilience. In particular contexts, our former healthy coping skills may suddenly prevent us from returning to our adaptive core. In therapy, I urge clients to learn to experience and tolerate emotions and access their instinctive coping capacities to build flexibility. This method allows clients to uncover their strengths and deepen their sense of hope, leading lives with vitality and exuberance.

What brings people to therapy is often some form of suffering. Many times this suffering is connected to a crisis such as divorce, illness, the death of a loved one, adjustment to a new culture or loss of employment. At other moments the reasons behind our suffering are not so clear. I believe that through psychotherapy we can learn to understand ourselves and become better able to embrace all that life has to offer. Each of us has a unique story and unless we figure out how to live it we cannot find the deepest meaning in our lives.

Are you feeling anxious, sad or do you feel less energy and satisfaction than you used to? Is something in your life not working like a relationship, your career, or a life goal - leaving you feeling frustrated and stuck? I specialize in helping people work through childhood trauma, along with current day issues - workplace stress, anxiety, infertility, divorce and grief . I tend to be an "in the trenches" therapist - highly empathic, listening and responding. I use EMDR therapy and Somatic Experiencing tools when that could be a useful approach to resolve areas in which you feel triggered or anxious.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
