These are challenging fast-moving times. The demands from family, career, social and romantic relationships can feel overwhelming and unmanageable. How do we find the time to excel in our professional lives and simultaneously make room for healthy loving connections with those that are important to us? How do we manage our anxiety, sadness, and grief in real-time when we are feeling angry, confused, isolated, and perhaps abusing alcohol, drugs to numb the overwhelming sense of fear, depression, or frustration we feel in our lives? How do we live our best lives and gravitate toward healthier connections and decision making?

Let me start by saying that I believe humans are powerful beings. Part of the human experience is to experience pain, suffering, and hardship. My goal is to help you navigate through the inevitable difficulties life will bring. To help you reach your goals, I will incorporate several evidence-based treatment modalities into our work together, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Most importantly, I feel strongly that there is healing power in being present with you, listening to you, and truly hearing what you have to say.

I strongly believe that each of us are the experts of our own experience and, simultaneously, often faced with circumstances that obstruct our attunement to our own needs. For many individuals (particularly those with marginalized identities), to access and honor one’s expertise surrounding their own needs and aspirations is to begin a radical and heroic journey—one in which therapy can serve as a transformative means of not only surviving but thriving.

I am confident that my clients can discover their own solutions to the conflicts and anxieties that bring them to therapy. I believe that people want to be heard by a professional who will help them develop new perspectives on themselves and their relationships, and who will assist them in finding creative ways to handle the anguish that daily living involves. I am exploratory and active and make interventions within the context of each person's historical narrative. I provide interventions and referrals when necessary.

I help people 18 and older manage exhausting emotions that torture, pressure them into knee jerk reactions, and make relationships difficult. Using evidence-based practical techniques, with a dash of warmth and humor, we'll work together to see the big picture, map a path, and manage what's in the way of getting some peace.

It takes significant strength to take the first step in initiating a connection with a therapist. I view all clients as experts of their own experience and I will follow your lead in establishing a treatment plan that will bring you closer to your personal goals. My experience as a trauma therapist includes 10 years of providing supportive services to survivors of crime and interpersonal abuse, as well as individuals impacted by depression and/or anxiety. I work with clients to build insight and skills that help to clarify challenges and maximize joy. Whether you're transitioning into a different phase of life or feeling stuck (hello, pandemic!), I will meet you there with curiosity and compassion. Together, we'll use a variety of techniques to identify both the barriers and the opportunities to lead the kind of life you want. While there is great strength in practicing healthy coping, self-care, and positive self-talk, I know that this is often much easier said than done! Sometimes we just need help developing, prioritizing and applying these skills and awareness in our daily lives.

Here is how I see it- every one of us has encountered unique challenges in our lives that have led us to how we are feeling and functioning in this moment. Often times, these challenges lead us to be harsh, inflexible, and unforgiving to ourselves, resulting in unwanted consequences in our relationships with ourselves, others, our work, and our families. My goal with clients is to help you gain knowledge, skills, and compassion as we explore these challenges and find new ways for you to relate to yourself and the world.

For those of us who do not feel loved and appreciated by this world, it can be difficult to trust ourselves and to honor our worth. Maybe the intergenerational traumas and ongoing struggles of our cultures and communities lead us to disconnect from others or to feel dissociated from ourselves. Maybe we diminish our feelings or hide parts of ourselves as survival strategies. When tangible systemic change seems slow or even impossible, it can also feel like self-love and joy are forever out of our reach.

Cognitive Processing (CPT) Therapists
How does cognitive processing therapy work?
A CPT therapist helps a client evaluate their thoughts about the trauma they experienced, focusing on maladaptive or self-blaming thoughts that can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, or depression. The therapist will work with a client to help them learn to challenge such thoughts and consider different perspectives. The therapist is also likely to ask a client to work on these techniques at home between meetings, such as writing an account of their trauma that can be read aloud during a future session.
What is cognitive processing therapy for PTSD?
Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy primarily used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to treat individuals who experienced abuse or violence, who survived natural disasters, who were first responders to such incidents, or who otherwise experienced trauma.
How long does cognitive processing therapy last?
CPT is a short-term therapy. Whether conducted one-on-one or in a group, a complete set of CPT sessions typically includes 12 weekly sessions, along with tasks for clients to complete at home, although this can vary depending on a client’s needs or a therapist’s particular treatment plan. Sessions typically last 60 or 90 minutes.
How effective is cognitive processing therapy?
A large body of research supports the use of CPT to treat people experiencing PTSD, finding it to be effective among different age groups, either in one-on-one therapy sessions or in a group therapy environment. Research suggests that although the initial sessions may be difficult, clients tend to begin to feel positive progress after the first few sessions, and that the benefits tend to last well after the therapy ends.
