I create a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment where we can explore what’s happening in your life now to collaborate on what might be possible for you in the future. Then, we will partner to understand what burdens you’ve taken on from your past—burdens that may have limited your belief systems or distorted your experience—to blaze new pathways towards your release from pain and entry into freedom and joy. I specialize in working with clients who struggle with anxiety , depression, and relationship issues. However, my approach is not a one size fits all formula. I tailor my work to the individual and their specific needs.

I have experience working with young men, women, and adolescents who live with eating disorders, anxiety , and depression.
Many people of all cultures are encouraged to be controlling or perfectionistic in all areas of their lives. Over time, this can be a draining emotional experience. If you are someone struggling to break out of labels that no longer fit and want to live more authentically, let’s work through that struggle together. Through compassionate listening and art-making, I will be a therapist who allows you to develop your unique identity in a safe and affirming virtual or in-person space. I believe that therapy should be an opportunity where you can openly experiment with how you wish to show up in the world.

I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals suffering from depression, anxiety , experiencing problems in relationships.
Seeking therapy can be overwhelming, and also relieving; it is an act of hope. I believe that the potential for personal growth and change within all of us is enormous, and I value the opportunity to work with clients as we weave between the present and the past to explore the impact each has on the other. I help my clients examine their personal histories and uncover unconscious barriers to achieving goals. I work with clients to uncover the stories that they have told themselves or have been told to them about who they are that keep them stuck.

Clinical Social Work/Therapist, MA, MSW, LCSW
While having extensive experience treating depression, ADHD, aggression issues and personality issues, I have come to specialize in working with anxiety , stress and irritability, through a unique approach I have developed, Habits of Mind which addresses the nature of the anxious mind.
My goal is to help clients overcome those difficulties that interfere with a life of authenticity, purpose and contentment. I have extensive post-graduate training and years of experience teaching other therapists child, adolescent and adult psychotherapy. Our therapeutic work may offer thoughtful questions, insights, suggestions, skills training and emotional support, drawing on an array of approaches including interpretive understanding, cognitive restructuring, problem solving, Habits of Mind principles and DBT-based affective regulation.I encourage feedback about the process, as this is often vital in refining our work together. Therapy with children and adolescents stresses careful assessment to understand what treatment approaches would be optimal.

I have a lot of experience with young adults who are suffering from anxiety and/or depression.
It is a privilege to be a therapist because patients entrust you with closely held and often pained parts of themselves, along with parts of themselves they are excited about and proud of. I see our work as the creation of a place where these different parts of the patient's self can come into the room and be acknowledged and recognized. Therapy is also a place where you, as the patient, can use my listening ear to help you withstand pain and anxiety . Please see my website: zanjacobusinsightpsychotherapy.com

I help people struggling with pregnancy and postpartum anxiety , infertility and loss by creating a warm and non-judgmental space to process their emotions and to develop coping skills to start to feel better.
Do you feel anxious most of the time? Perhaps you're trying to get pregnant and the IVF schedule is making your head spin. It may be that you're pregnant, but you're nervous about how a baby will change your relationship and sense of self. Or, you're grieving a loss, and you've heard "at least you know you can get pregnant" one too many times. You want to make sense of all the complicated, and often competing, emotions you feel, so that you can let go of what is no longer serving you.

People come to therapy for a variety of reasons, including relationship and professional frustrations or issues related to depression and anxiety . The therapeutic process can focus on many themes at once, while we move towards helping you create a happier, more satisfying life. I take a relational approach in my work, utilizing the safe and trusting relationship we build together to reflect on life stressors that present themselves. While we will work collaboratively, your treatment will be driven by you and the areas you want to focus on.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
