It takes patience, trust, and a close, caring therapeutic
relationship
.
I am a psychotherapist and New York Times best-selling author who works with adolescents, teens, and adults. My focus is on helping my patients, young people included, to discover and explore the patterns, beliefs, and default behaviors they bring to their most vital relationships: to their parents, their siblings, their friends, their intimate partners, and not least of all to themselves. When working with adolescents and teens, I consider it crucial to look at the whole family, to better understand how its members communicate, share space, and set boundaries with one another.

I believe deeply in the healing power of the therapeutic
relationship
and aim to build a safe space, which communicates that as we land with one another, all parts of you are welcome and loved here.
Life can be painful and complicated at times, and so often we react instead of respond to stress. Whether you are an adult, teen, or child, emotions can be complex to navigate and difficult to manage alone. My goal is to support you through difficult moments, help you build awareness and understanding for your behaviors and feelings, gain clarity in confusing times, better understand your relationships, and ultimately help you see life in clearer terms. As a collaborator on this journey, I aim to provide a nurturing and safe environment so that you may explore your internal nature and grow in all the ways you desire.

The resulting environment creates a transparent, collaborative and non judgmental
relationship
where change can be fostered in the present moment and then put into practice in daily life.
Life is a complicated and often overwhelming experience. Stress, anxiety, and depression are common reactions to abnormal circumstances. It’s easy to get lost in the motions of everyday life- managing your career, relationships, and responsibilities often take precedence over your mental health. I believe that you already have what it takes to be better adjusted and more content. I will help you strengthen your existing coping mechanisms and learn new strategies to reframe your perspective. You will become more in tune with your emotional needs, learn how to communicate them effectively, and distinguish what no longer serves you.

For over 20 years, I have been working with diverse individuals and
couples
in therapy.
Individuals and
couples
who see me for therapy are typically dealing with anxiety, depression,
relationship
issues, a low sense of self-worth, grief, and/or trauma. They are struggling to take risks with vulnerability, to process loss, set boundaries, understand the power of no, discern safe spaces, and build trust. Many of my patients are challenged by the stories their anxiety tells them, negative self-talk, sadness that makes it difficult to effectively process their thoughts and feelings, and previous traumatic experiences or vicarious exposure to trauma.

I also specialize in helping people navigate life transitions, including: high school to college, school to work, job transitions and
relationship
changes.
I believe that therapy is a collaborative effort, with a mutual goal of enhancing a sense of control over one's life and promoting meaningful change. I strive to create a setting where therapeutic techniques exist alongside the creation of a safe environment, with a focus on compassion and understanding. In individual therapy, I offer psychodynamic, CBT and trauma-focused treatment (including EMDR). I am pleased to offer an individual process group at my Brooklyn location.

In trying to best understand the many challenges facing
couples
and families I have completed a 3-year post-graduate training at the Ackerman Institute for the Family.
I consider personal relationships to be at the core of a person's happiness. Relationships with family, loved ones, friends, and even co-workers need fostering and attention. Working to improve those relationships can be done through individual or
couples
and family therapy alike. I like to build on strengths already there, hear from you what has worked and not worked in the past, and build moments of connection during the session that can be carried to the time between sessions and strengthened at home with tools and insight. I am also able to do home studies for domestic, international, and seocnd-parent adoptions.

I work with clients who suffer from range of emotional problems, including difficulties with anger management, depression, anxiety, interpersonal, and family issues. I work with
couples
, families, children, and adult individuals. I use individual, group, and family therapy as treatment modalities. I view psychotherapy as a process whereby a client is assisted to explore, understand, and constructs his/her past experiences in more realistic and positive ways to help strengthen one's self-esteem. This process is achieved by creating a working environment of trust, acceptance and non judgment that fosters self-acceptance and emotional growth.

It is even more difficult adapting to change that is forced upon us. We often feel alone, vulnerable and unmoored in these moments of transition. I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience treating adolescents and adults in a myriad of settings. In these roles, I've provided individualized therapy to support with
relationship
, academic, and interpersonal issues, among others. I've also done extensive social justice work with young women. In my practice, the
relationship
is the main healing agent in a therapeutic dynamic. I've found that clients seek largely to feel seen and heard, and that my role is to co-create a safe space for them to grow. I'm guided by the E. Dickinson quote, "I felt it shelter to speak to you."

I am a social worker partnering with people to make changes in their lives. Creating change can be challenging, and I provide the security and consistency that allows people to grow. I believe that therapy is built on respect, acknowledgment, and reflection where people can develop a clearer picture of their lives, what is working and what could be improved. The support within this
relationship
allows people to increase their self-awareness, self-compassion, control over their emotions, and coping strategies. Simply regularly meeting with an accepting, non-judgmental therapist can help people feel more at ease in their daily lives.

Beginning therapy, although challenging, can be a real opportunity to better understand yourself and your choices. and ultimately improve your overall quality of life. By examining our feelings, thoughts, and repeating patterns more closely, one gains insight and can be mobilized to change. I am a clinical psychologist who is dedicated to working with adults, both individuals and
couples
, to both explore and challenge that which is getting in the way of a more meaningful and adaptive way of being with yourself and others.

Brynley believes the most important role of a therapist is as facilitator. In every interaction she is most concerned with creating a safe space that will allow insight to naturally arise as you walk your own individually tailored journey to healing and wellness. She believes the
relationship
between therapist and client is the most important ingredient in a successful treatment. Above all else, Brynley prioritizes connection, curiosity, communication, and empathy.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
