I’m here to make space for you or your adolescent child to mourn the life we knew before March of 2020.
Being a young person today is much harder than the world makes it out to be. Managing the transition from adolescence to young adulthood can be quite jarring, particularly during a time where social connection is limited, fear and anxiety are at an all-time high, and coping skills are limited to whatever we can pursue within the constraints of our homes.

As a parent of a struggling child or teen , do you often find yourself wondering what you can do to help them feel better? Do they wrestle with daily stressors (school and homework pressure, family/peer issues, self-image, COVID-19 fears) and emotional issues ? Parents often feel that they have run out of ideas of how to help. They just want their child to thrive. I have helped children and teens that were struggling with anxiety disorders, self-regulation, low self-esteem, body image concerns, and anger issues. I work with parents to help them develop strategies to help their children as their needs change over the years.

I have extensive experience providing individual (adult and adolescent ), family (including couples) and group therapy.
As a clinical social work practitioner, I have provided services to people across the lifespan. I utilize a client-centered approach and work in collaboration with each client to plan their course of therapy. I prefer a brief therapy approach in order to focus on the most pressing reason for a person seeking therapeutic services, however, I combine various methodologies in my treatment approach including but not not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Insight Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy.

My areas of focus include self harming behaviors, low self esteem, depression, anxiety and panic attacks, substance use, and teen dating violence.
Seeing your child angry, depressed, anxious, and engaging in self destructive behaviors like cutting or using substances is overwhelming, confusing and frightening. Maybe something recently happened that explains these changes, or maybe it feels like this has come out of nowhere. Either way, you have come to the right place, and I am here to help.  I have devoted my practice to supporting teens and their families through one of the most tumultuous times of their life.

I have trained extensively in child and adolescent therapy, narrative and couples therapy, and sex therapy.
Whether working with couples, adolescents, families, or adult individuals, I see the therapy room as a place for clients to discuss the parts of themselves and their lives that they can’t talk about anywhere else. My approach is open, playful, and collaborative. I use a combination of narrative therapy, mindfulness, and psychodynamic techniques to help clients identify the stories they tell about themselves that are unhelpful; by examining and eliminating these, clients are better able to grow and change.

As a clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist, I have expertise in both therapy and assessment, which provides me with a unique perspective on underlying reasons for behaviors and appropriate interventions. Through my assessments, I am able to pin point each child, teen , and young adult's strengths and needs. This empowers families with diagnostic clarity and direction for treatment and educational planning. In collaboration with parents and schools, I help identify appropriate school-based supports, including standardized testing and college accommodations, and draw upon my experience in educational advocacy.

I specialize in working with adolescent clients (gay, lesbian, straight, questioning and transgender), which includes providing support and guidance to their parents.
Psychotherapy offers us the opportunity to have the support we need to examine those areas of our lives we find painful, confusing, and/or challenging. It is common for all of us from time to time to feel "stuck" in our lives, or faced with problems that we cannot seem to overcome. My goal is to help my clients access their internal and interpersonal resources in ways that are healing and help them gain a greater sense of personal agency in their lives. We may achieve this by exploring the past, looking at the present, or a combination of both.

The therapeutic relationship with your teen will center listening and validating their experience.
Are you feeling slightly reluctant about your child needing help? Have previous interventions thus far been unsuccessful? Maybe the 'problem' has only been exacerbated by time? Some moodiness, anxiety, and socioemotional difficulties are expected as kids grow up. However, the possibility of your child struggling with tough emotions has increased even more due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. It can be challenging to admit that your child may need professional support; I commend you on your effort in seeking relief for them.

I provide child, adolescent and adult psychotherapy for a variety of issues, including anxiety, low self esteem, trauma, adoption and loss. With these kinds of issues, play and art therapy interventions are helpful for children and adolescents. For clients struggling with anxiety and developmental issues such as Autism, ADHD, a more didactic, cognitive-behavioral strategy oriented approach can be used. My work with adults is psychodynamically based with use of strategies from dialectical and cognitive therapies as warranted. Another important component of my practice is neuropsychological assessment for learning, attention, social and emotional issues in children, adolescents and adults.

Life can be painful and complicated at times, and so often we react instead of respond to stress. Whether you are an adult, teen , or child, emotions can be complex to navigate and difficult to manage alone. My goal is to support you through difficult moments, help you build awareness and understanding for your behaviors and feelings, gain clarity in confusing times, better understand your relationships, and ultimately help you see life in clearer terms. As a collaborator on this journey, I aim to provide a nurturing and safe environment so that you may explore your internal nature and grow in all the ways you desire.

I worked for many years in child and adolescent mental health clinics and then in a school for behaviorally challenged children.
Have you felt like you are missing your partner, or have lost the ability to talk to each other? Do you long to feel more connected? If you cannot understand why so many of your interactions with your partner or children end up in arguments then I might be able to help. I work with families who are experiencing this kind of distance and escalations. My clients state that after our work together: they communicate better, feel more connected and 'in sync" with each other and are better able to meet each other's needs. I have heard comments such as, "I feel like I am falling in love again" and "thank you, I got my child back".

Kids are under enormous pressure at home, in school and with peers. These pressures can present themselves in many ways -- as childhood anxiety, adolescent depression, or school behavioral problems. My focus is on making your child feel heard, while providing them with a tool belt of coping mechanisms that can be accessed whenever they are feeling overwhelmed. Your child will build self-esteem along with practical emotional awareness and regulation skills that can be incorporated into their daily lives.

Have you wondered if your child or adolescent would benefit from therapy? I offer a complimentary consultation to discuss any questions you may have. I can help your child explore their feelings, make sense of their experience, and develop their full potential. I can help your child become their own therapist by learning techniques and coping strategies to learn how to deal with their challenges in their lives. I work well with children and adolescents struggling with anxiety, depression, social issues, learning issues, attention deficit disorder, and body image issues. Clients often see improved well-being early on in therapy.

I offer adult and adolescent individual therapy, with a focus on relationships.
Whatever brings you to therapy, talking to a well-trained, warm and sensitive therapist is likely to bring relief. I believe that a collaborative, genuinely caring therapeutic relationship is the key to successful therapy. Within the context of an empathic relationship, a person is safe to get to know her or his own feelings and habits, and where they come from. They are then unbound to repeat the same unhelpful patterns.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
