A majority of my work is with
couples
who want to improve their
relationship
by learning more effective communication and coping skills. This includes pre-marital counseling. Some common complaints I hear are: "I feel disconnected to my
partner
"; "He/she just doesn't understand my needs"; and "There just isn't any more passion between us anymore". Most relationships reach a point at some time when partners feel unsupportive and not heard. Whether it's due to financial stress, illness, or a past infidelity, my aim is to help
couples
get to the root cause and help them create a treatment plan to meet their goals.

I try to make the process of starting therapy as straight forward and welcoming as possible. My approach is to get to know you by creating an atmosphere where you can speak freely about your life. Everybody has frustrations, doubts, aches, unpredictable circumstances, and a desire for growth and connection. Without proper attention, these difficulties can sometimes develop into depression, anxiety, and destructive behaviors. I believe in the importance of enduring relationships, meaningful work, balance, creativity, and taking good care of yourself. I am available for consultations, individual therapy,
couples
therapy, group therapy, and referrals to family therapy and psychiatric care.

I have extensive experience working with individuals and
couples
experiencing challenges related to anxiety, depression, life and career transitions, intimacy, self-esteem, body esteem, communication, infidelity, divorce, grief, trauma, and financial hardship.
I believe therapy is an opportunity for people to explore themselves and their relationships in order to create space for self-acceptance and deeper connections. In our work together, we will explore life’s challenges, celebrate its joys, and process the experiences in between. I practice focusing on clients' strengths, collaborating to create an individualized approach to address each client’s unique needs.

Navigating life’s challenges in an increasingly chaotic world can feel overwhelming, scary, and even numbing; as a licensed counselor I believe in the power of therapy to facilitate healing, growth, safety, serenity, and self-actualization in the face of life's many demands. I am a passionate advocate for social equity, justice, and accessibility to services for all, and while I work with people of all walks and persuasions, I specialize in therapy with fellow members of the LGBTQ+ community, individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use challenges, and those dealing with trauma, depression, and anxiety.

What are the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves? Where do we learn them? Therapy is a great place to start creating new stories that are more aligned with your values and desires. I believe that healing happens in the
relationship
and approach therapy as a creative, collaborative experience between therapist and client, where humor, kindness, and self-expression are valued and encouraged. My areas of expertise include working with children and adolescents who have experienced trauma and family conflict, though I work with individuals of all ages to help them manage the stressors of life and achieve greater self-awareness

I work with individuals,
couples
and families confronting issues of depression, anxiety, stress,
relationship
problems, loss, parenting issues, aging, trauma and alcohol/substance use.
Life experiences can bring pain and conflict resulting in depression, anxiety and coping with substances. I frequently hear the expression of loneliness, emptiness and feeling unfulfilled in people's lives and the sadness, disappointment and anger over relationships with themselves, partners, family and friends that fail to satisfy those needs. Experience has taught me that feeling heard and understood generates a sense of hope and stimulates movement toward insight through exploration and examination of one's inner life. Psychodynamic psychotherapy offers the framework and space for this work, leading to corrective emotional experiences and a more satisfying life and relationships.

I work with individuals,
couples
, and groups. I help people identify and eliminate beliefs and perspectives that prevent them from living with love, confidence, and enthusiasm. Anxiety is reduced by identifying causes and applying mindful, body-present skills. Depression is lifted through expression and removing draining blocks that prevent action. Relationships are improved by focusing on communication and eliminating blame, resentment, and individual defenses that block deep intimacy. The more we know about ourselves, the more we're able to let go of old patterns and make decisions that lead to a more joyful and fulfilling life.

The collective grief of the pandemic has left us facing anxiety and unstability we may have already been managing before, but it's now magnified by the loss of so much of what we remember having. Emerging feelings can include grief, depression,
relationship
issues, parenting stress, and even anger. This can leave us feeling isolated and alone as we struggle to navigate through the monotony and difficulties of our new every day.

Clients who I see in my practice are often struggling with things such as
relationship
and parenting stress, panic disorder, ADHD, depression, OCD, trauma, and substance use/addiction.
Initiating change in life is hard, but therapy can help you make movement in areas where you have felt stuck. I believe the work we do in therapy is not only about feeling better or gaining insight, but also about feeling whole. While the process can be difficult, it can also be rewarding. I enjoy doing this work with my clients and appreciate being a part of their process. I recognize how difficult it can be to find the right therapist and I’m happy to speak to you by phone for a free consultation.

I work with a range of issues including mood disorders:
relationship
issues, parenting as well as with people who have experienced trauma in one form or another.
As a clinical psychologist my goal is to help clients find ways to help themselves be happier and more satisfied with their lives. People usually come to therapy because they are suffering in some way: perhaps anxious or depressed or they have trouble finding or sustaining meaningful relationships. The goal of treatment is to begin to talk openly and honestly about the obstacles in ones life and to think about how to move forward. I will work toward putting you in charge of your own well being, but I will also work carefully to ensure you are safe and well cared for: this will be a collaborative effort.

Children/adolescents: Childhood can be a challenging time and, because children lack the experience and internal resources that adults have, they often express themselves through their behaviors. As a parent it can be hard to understand your child's behaviors or how to address them. In my practice I create a warm, fun, and safe environment and work to establish a trusting
relationship
so that we can explore your child’s thoughts and feelings. I work collaboratively with parents to help them gain insights into their child's behaviors and how to effectively meet their child’s needs.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
