I believe the purpose of psychotherapy is to ease emotional and
relationship
difficulties and increase satisfaction in life. Clients come to therapy with diverse needs, but typically they are seeking help either to deal with immediate life crises or to address ongoing challenges. In my practice these have included issues of anxiety and depression; bereavement; effects of trauma; parenting and
relationship
concerns; and varied behavior problems. I see both children and adults and have a subspecialty in
couples counseling
. For psychotherapeutic techniques to be successful they must be adapted to the client's unique needs and circumstances.

I work with kids, teenagers, parents,

We can all get trapped in a way of thinking or relating to the world that does not serve our end goals. I work with clients to help them become aware of these patterns, understand their origin and utility, while at the same time fostering the freedom, perspective, and skills to break away from these patterns when needed. I view therapy as a co-investigative process, where you and I can look together, with neutrality, curiosity and compassion, at the forces that are shaping your emotional life, and see if there might be a different way of experiencing the world.

I believe in creating a collaborative, non-judgmental, supportive therapeutic environment to build a trusting
relationship
that leads to the empowerment and growth of the client.
It is my passion to normalize mental health treatment and improve accessibility to mental health care for all, by listening to the individual’s needs and wants, assisting them to reach their unique goals. Every person experiences the world in a different way depending on their history and intersectionality. I believe it's important to go into your world as much as possible and work with you on the things you face and see them from your perspective.

I strive to create a space where clients can come and speak without fear and judgment about their greatest challenges and aspirations in a confidential environment. Do you find yourself looking in the mirror and wondering, "how did I get here?" then I might be the right fit as a therapist for you. As a professional practitioner I find that I am extremely effective with people trying to wear multiple hats in life; managing work and family, coping with chronic illness and balancing professional aspirations, trying to reclaim your sexual identity while being an engaged parent or
partner
.

Hello, my name is Luther L. Turner, Jr., a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years experience working with adults,
couples
, adolescents, and children in treatment. It's my belief that psychotherapy is an invaluable tool in enriching one's life. Whether its marital problems, mental health issues , overcoming addictions, emotional conflicts, or individual concerns; psychotherapy is, in my view, the most effective tool in not only discovering the underlining dynamics, but also provide practical solutions, that addressing one's choices in life as one initiates that first step in achieving a more satisfying and rewarding life.

The resulting environment creates a transparent, collaborative and non judgmental
relationship
where change can be fostered in the present moment and then put into practice in daily life.
Life is a complicated and often overwhelming experience. Stress, anxiety, and depression are common reactions to abnormal circumstances. It’s easy to get lost in the motions of everyday life- managing your career, relationships, and responsibilities often take precedence over your mental health. I believe that you already have what it takes to be better adjusted and more content. I will help you strengthen your existing coping mechanisms and learn new strategies to reframe your perspective. You will become more in tune with your emotional needs, learn how to communicate them effectively, and distinguish what no longer serves you.

Talking helps. You might come to therapy because you’re looking for a place where you can say more - what you’re reluctant to say to others and what you may have never even said to yourself. Or you may be wanting to be understood. Or you may be seeking relief from discomfort. When we first meet, I take a keen and accepting interest in getting to know what’s most important to you.

Experienced individual and
couples
therapist. Often times, people find that they experience unhappiness, anxiety, or repeated obstacles to getting what they want in relationships, work, or other areas of our lives. Through a cooperative, supportive
relationship
with the right therapist, you can learn how to cope with what the "universe" throws your way, and which of your own behaviors and conflicts are contributing to your unhappiness. By talking with someone you trust and feel comfortable with, I believe anyone can learn to know themselves better and to live more consciously and deliberately.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
