Trauma and PTSD Therapists in Brooklyn Navy Yard, NY

I’ve helped many people who received limited or no help from previous therapists or medications. I work well with people who are skeptical of, or intimidated by, talk therapy. When you are physically ill you turn to your doctor, trusting they can effectively treat your symptoms. Psychological and emotional problems that cause depression, anxiety, excessive anger, low self confidence, guilt/shame, along with relationship and work conflicts, can actually cause more suffering than physical illnesses. I have more than 25 years of experience, and my approach to working with people is thorough, interactive, and practical.

I have first hand experience as a member of the neurodivergent, LGBTQ+, and kink communities, and thus have a unique ability to provide insight and support to other members of those communities. I was inspired to become a therapist because of my own experiences with therapy and a desire to help those in marginalized communities

Making the decision to start therapy is one the best gifts you can give yourself. That might sound a bit cliché, but giving yourself permission to focus on your own needs and discover more about yourself can be an incredible process. This is especially true if perhaps you’ve gotten used to putting the needs of others first, by being a caregiver to a parent or family member who may be struggling with a physical or mental illness or substance misuse. Learning to put the focus back on yourself and figuring out what gives you happiness and fulfillment is one the many ways that a good therapeutic relationship can enrich your life.

The objective would be to develop the insight, self-confidence, and concrete skills to shift from feelings of shame, guilt or anger to feelings of empowerment, confidence and love to have healthier lives and relationships.

Since obtaining my licensure in NY as an LMHC ten years ago, I have been supporting clients struggling with stress and anxiety symptoms, coping with addictions, relationship issues, and trauma and abuse.
Feeling the pressures of everyday life, struggling with ‘imposter syndrome,’ flooded with thoughts that you’re not meeting your own expectations (or someone else’s)? These are just a few of the areas I commonly support clients with.
I regularly work with young adults and professionals coping with recent life changes and/or stressors that are impacting their ability to: concentrate, engage with others or maintain meaningful relationships or manage their emotional state.

I have specialized, extensive experience working with trauma, including healthcare workers, interpersonal violence, sexual assault, and military combat.
Here is how I see it- every one of us has encountered unique challenges in our lives that have led us to how we are feeling and functioning in this moment. Often times, these challenges lead us to be harsh, inflexible, and unforgiving to ourselves, resulting in unwanted consequences in our relationships with ourselves, others, our work, and our families. My goal with clients is to help you gain knowledge, skills, and compassion as we explore these challenges and find new ways for you to relate to yourself and the world.

From Behavioral Modification approaches to self-reflective insights to mind-body connections to grief work to addressing PTSD, I assist my clients in making life changes.
These are challenging fast-moving times. The demands from family, career, social and romantic relationships can feel overwhelming and unmanageable. How do we find the time to excel in our professional lives and simultaneously make room for healthy loving connections with those that are important to us? How do we manage our anxiety, sadness, and grief in real-time when we are feeling angry, confused, isolated, and perhaps abusing alcohol, drugs to numb the overwhelming sense of fear, depression, or frustration we feel in our lives? How do we live our best lives and gravitate toward healthier connections and decision making?

You’re ready for a transformation that goes deeper than symptom management—you want real healing that addresses the core of your trauma.
Are you a millennial woman who feels stuck in the same painful patterns of self-doubt, overachievement, and striving for approval? Perhaps you’ve spent years prioritizing everyone else’s needs, saying yes when you wanted to say no, and exhausting yourself trying to be the “perfect” friend, daughter, or partner. For many, these patterns stem from deeper wounds, not just perfectionism on the surface. You may have grown up in a family where love felt conditional, or with emotionally immature or substance-abusing parents, leaving you with emotional scars that traditional talk therapy hasn’t been able to heal.

I have training in trauma-informed modalities for teens and adults that help people connect with their feelings.
For those of you who feel like you understand the factors that led to the patterns keeping you stuck, but as hard as you try to think your way out of it, you just wind yourself tighter. Or maybe you’ve found yourself thinking, “I know why I’m like this, but I can't seem to change," or if you’ve ever had someone tell you you just need to feel your feelings, and you inquire incredulously, “How?,” experiential therapy may be what can help soften these cycles.
I’m Alex (they/she). I’m a white, queer therapist; for many years I had the same experience many of my clients have, and now I help clients get out of those familiar cycles.

My approach has worked well for clients seeking therapy for various reasons, including survivors of direct and/or intergenerational trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, body-focused repetitive behaviors, and those seeking to explore their sexuality and/or gender identities.
I draw from psychodynamic, CBT and DBT therapies, tailoring treatment specifically to what works best for you. Whether you are brand new to therapy or have previously been in treatment, I know that fostering a relationship with a new therapist can be daunting and I aim to make it a little less so with kindness and understanding.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
