I have extensive experience supporting people dealing with anxiety, grief/loss, chronic illness, codependency, among others.
Beginning a journey of emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing can be intimidating. I know because I’ve been there. It’s hard to know where to start when there are thousands of diets, workout plans, and therapists to choose from. The good news is it’s not as complicated as it seems! The first step in solving any problem is awareness which means you are already on your way. I will help you develop the knowledge you need to create a wellness plan that best suits you as a unique individual. I will support you emotionally through the ups and downs of this journey, and help you process past traumas if they are showing up.

The most important part of therapy is the relationship between the therapist and client. I pride myself in building strong, caring therapeutic alliances. I have expertise in treating anxiety, depression, chronic illness, phobias, and PTSD. Nobody likes to admit that they need help, but sometimes it can be a life transforming opportunity.

Do you find it hard to feel at ease in your body and mind? Do you feel stuck in patterns that are not working for you, but not sure why they’re happening or how to change them? You’re not alone in feeling this way. If you have endured trauma at any point in your life, you may now struggle to feel safe in everyday situations. You may notice that a sense of danger keeps you on edge at all times. You don’t need to have a near death experience or witness extreme violence to suffer from the impact of trauma. I can help you move towards a version of your life where emotional and physical discomfort no longer dictate your decisions.

The first step is realizing you're facing a challenge that needs your attention or perhaps you notice things are not flowing for you lately. The second step is realizing that you need assistance processing it to understand it fully, like most of us. The third and last step is deciding to make a change in your life by taking action, and starting a therapeutic relationship with an effective and experienced psychotherapist.

I like to think of therapy as an onion. With every layer we peel back, we potentially can face great pain & tears. But it’s worth it, because life, just like an onion, is so tasty when it's outer layer has been peeled away & we decide to use it in a way that is totally different from how it started. With life, it’s in the unpeeling (discovering), chopping (analyzing), and making us cry (healing) that we learn and grow. Is it uncomfortable? Yes! Is it worth the discomfort? Absolutely! Each layer that we peel away, brings us closer to our true selves and allows us to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

There are many different reasons to seek treatment including the obvious ones-depression, anxiety, a life crisis, loss of loved one, work issues & so on. For other individuals, it may be less clear-cut--maybe you seek to better understand yourself, change your relationship patterns or learn new ways of dealing with situations without repeating self-destructive behaviors. Or maybe you are struggling with a difficult pregnancy or loss of one or the life-changing world of becoming a mother and “baby blues” that don’t seem to go away.

Fred Rogers said, "What is mentionable, is manageable." I consistently find this to be true. Our thoughts and feelings can seem insurmountable when they stay in our minds and there is something wonderful about how verbal release can be powerfully unburdening. I love helping people find relief, clarity and hope.

I work with clients interested in self-exploration or symptom relief. My goal is to collaborate with each client to make their therapy experience both affirming and change-oriented. I often seek a middle path with clients, to avoid all or nothing thinking - something that causes many of us to feel stuck and uncomfortable. The idea is to move closer to your values and needs while reducing anxiety, tension, stress, and dysphoria.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
