Some areas that I commonly help my clients with are grief and loss, accepting what is in and out of our control, self-esteem,
couples
and
relationship
issues.
You know where you want to be, and you have some insight into how to get there and some things that are holding you back. You just want an extra set of eyes and ears to assist in creating some clarity and intention in navigating your way. This is where I come in, using a person-centered approach, where I first listen and understand your complete picture, and then use my personal and professional knowledge and experience to shed light and give feedback on certain areas for growth. With that, my hope is that our work together serves as the bridge between where you are and where you want to be.

I help people with a variety of issues including healing from trauma, depression, anxiety,
relationship
issues, school and behavior issues, and developmental disorders.
I believe you are the main player in your life. Sometimes it may not feel this way, whether it is past experiences, unhelpful habits, or challenges arising in your relationships that seem to be taking the lead. My approach builds on established skills to develop the necessary tools to help you feel in control again. This process can take time, but will help you live the life that you want. Together, we can take time to explore your goals and obstacles, while also getting to know you as a person. You are the expert on your life, so I view therapy as a collaborative team approach that allows me to serve as a supportive guide.

Couples
Therapy can help you see clearly what is currently happening in your
relationship
.
If you find yourself frequently arguing with your
partner
, if you’re losing connection, if you’re feeling lonely, frustrated or simply poorly treated and don’t know where to turn, I am glad you are here. You may be stuck in unhealthy
relationship
cycle, where you feel like you are growing apart instead of growing together. If you’re not feeling happy and hope that the
relationship
can be repaired you may benefit from
Couples
or Marriage Counseling. As your therapist, I can help you work through resentment, move on from hurts and anger, heal past experiences, resolve conflict and empower you to stand up for yourself in a loving way.

Are you struggling with mental health symptoms - anxiety, depression,
relationship
or family issues, intrusive thoughts, isolation, loneliness, grief or general "stress"? The discomfort may be the result of a short-term situational experience. Or it could be something you have struggled with for years. Counseling or psychotherapy can help you reduce or eliminate the discomfort you are experiencing. Just as people at times experience uncomfortable physical health symptoms, they can also experience uncomfortable mental health symptoms. The good news is, you can regain control over your emotions, your thoughts and your life!

We educate
couples
about tools and concepts, and challenge
couples
to stick to their goals.
Hi there! We are Doug & Nana, husband and wife, both licensed social workers and therapists. We see
couples
together. We utilize our professional training, as well as what we have learned from our own
relationship
challenges and successes. We do not sit back and listen to
couples
fight. We actively engage and coach. We work best with
couples
in which both partners are actively seeking change, and we work on (and measure) specific goals of counseling. Although we have attended level 1 and 2 of Gottman Method training, we only use aspects of their approach, because in our experience it seems each couple needs something different.

Do you ever feel like your mind won't stop racing? Like your worries are taking over? You find yourself "on edge" much of the time-you snap at your kids or
partner
, you can't focus at work, you have trouble falling asleep. Maybe you can't help feeling like you aren't good enough, or have a nagging sense of what you "should" be doing, how you "should" feel, how you "should" be. Perhaps you feel a sense of shame about who you are or things you have experienced, and this makes it hard just to get through the day. It's all so overwhelming...you just want to feel normal again, but you can't even remember what "normal" feels like.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
