Has substance use become the thing holding your days together, even as it costs you more than it gives back?
My work centers on substance use, trauma, and the depression that usually lives underneath both. I draw on CBT, DBT, and emotionally focused approaches to help clients understand the patterns driving the behavior. When relationships are part of the pictureI bring in a Family System Lens. For clients navigating faith, I also integrate Christian counseling.

I am a Christian counselor/coach and I am passionate about helping men experience freedom from compulsive behaviors and, as a result, a deeper connection with God, themselves, and others. I specialize in helping men struggling with addictive and compulsive behaviors like pornography, sex, drugs, alcohol, food, work, video games, relationships, etc. After more than 20 years of experience, I have found that true lasting healing does not happen in isolation. Weekly recovery groups provide the accountability, honesty, and brotherhood required for lasting transformation. That is why I now fully focus on the power of group work.

We all have the potential to grow and to achieve happiness and fulfillment in our lives. Sometimes this is not always an easy process. Life is full of challenges and some of them can be debilitating, impairing our ability to function. Regardless of whether you are experiencing a crisis (traumatic experience, relationship distress, divorce, grief) or desperately trying to change an old pattern of behavior, I am here to listen. I want to help you succeed and break free of whatever it may be causing you pain and suffering. Pain is inevitable suffering is not! Using evidence-based techniques I assist clients in achieving their goals.

As a passionate and dedicated trauma therapist, I believe in the transformative power of therapy. At the core of our existence lies the profound truth that self-love is essential for all human beings. To truly seek fulfillment, we must first uncover the unique gifts we possess and release the repressed emotions that may be holding us back. Without self-love, our efforts in relationships and personal endeavors may falter, as these unaddressed emotions can infiltrate every interaction we have. Sustaining loving relationships, whether with ourselves or others, requires skill, practice, and a genuine commitment to growth.

FREE 15 minute phone consultation. If you're struggling with stressful relationships, a dysfunctional past, anxiety, sadness, impossible life circumstances, or unhealthy coping, I would be honored to work with you. Seeing a psychologist for help with your personal struggles is a courageous step, especially if you've never seen a therapist before. Therapy can be hard work. It can mean facing yourself and your emotions in a very real way, but it can also mean growing in ways you didn't think possible before. In my practice YOU are the focus, not your problem.

I primarily focus on trauma/PTSD, unresolved grief, and substance use/relapse prevention; however, these concerns often are accompanied by depression or anxiety and thoughts of hopelessness and may even include suicidal thinking.
If you're breathing, you CAN change! This is my personal and professional belief. The change you want is NOT out of your reach. Often, we see what is "wrong" or what is missing in our lives, but what if we focus on what is right in our lives instead? Let's create a foundation based on your strengths and use that platform to help you find the obstacles that are keeping you stuck.

You may look functional on the outside while carrying trauma, anxiety, or substance use patterns that have been running your life for years.
My work centers on trauma and the coping patterns that grow around it, including anxiety, substance use, and low self-worth. In therapy, we look closely at what your system has learned to do to protect you, then build new ways to respond so you can feel more grounded, more aware of your needs, and less pulled by old survival patterns.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
