I have tremendous respect for the courage it takes to share sensitive aspects of your life. Everyone has unique circumstances so I take time to get to know you personally, your strengths, limitations, and customize treatment accordingly. I don't take a cookie-cutter approach to helping you. Each session, we set an agenda, review improvements, and work as a team to focus on your treatment goals. My therapeutic work is evidence-based, informed by research, and together we will track your changes to assess your progress toward treatment goals.

Are you or your child struggling with learning, anxiety, depression, and attention deficit and you need assessment right away? Or perhaps your child is too gifted and talented and not working to its potential with another failing report card on its way and it is clear that your child needs help. It leaves you completely overwhelmed, feeling like you are the only person trying to do anything about it as the school is letting it all happen. You see several struggles in reading, writing, organization, forgetting things learned, making the same mistakes over and over again? Do you wonder if your child needs IEP or gifted education?

I am well prepared to evaluate and treat mood disturbances, depression, anger, anxiety, obsessions, attention deficit issues, psychosis, and psychiatric aspects of medical illness, like chronic pain.
My name is Jay Somers. I am a doctoral trained PA practicing in psychiatry and mental wellness for the past 24 years. I specialize in treating a host of disorders that stem from low neurotransmitter levels (e.g., serotonin, GABA, and dopamine.) At times I prescribe commonly used anti-anxiety/depressants that can be useful in the short or long term, depending on the situation. However, I look at the whole body, and many times, naturally restoring the brain's normal function resolves the need for prescription medication with the advantage that It is extremely effective with none of the downside of prescription medication.

I specialize in adult ADD / ADHD issues including time management, focus, organization, and efficiency.
Everyone struggles sometimes, but there are times when we need help to get through those struggles and therapy is a really good way to do just that! Some of the struggles that people come to talk to me about include procrastination, lack of motivation, worry, and difficulty enjoying life in general. If you find that things just don’t seem to be working out the way they “used to” or maybe you’ve just never quite gotten the hang of things, let’s see if we can’t figure out what’s going on and discuss how to get your life going in a different direction.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
