Adam is a down-to-earth optimist who believes that positive change is always possible, even in difficult circumstances. Therapy is the process of identifying and actualizing positive change. Adam wants to nonjudgmentally explore your whole self, even the difficult to share parts. Through this exploration, he hopes to help you find deeper understanding of your authentic self. We are constantly told what we should want out of life, what we should be doing, how we should show up in the world. Adam wants to foster your bravery and agency to ignore the shoulds and define your own path.

I believe it takes courage to begin the process of change. With that spirit, I try to embody the African Proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” I believe we can all heal, change and grow, particularly when we have support and love in the process. I feel deeply honored to walk arm in arm in therapy with the clients I see. In both my therapeutic work and personally, I value humor, compassion, and sincerity. The therapist you choose is someone whom you’ve entrusted to build a safe and healing relationship.

I have practiced for 36 years in Minnesota, seeing children, adults, couples and families. My practice currently is primarily with adults and couples (and teens) who are seeking a therapist who is collaborative, offers guidance and new perspectives, and believes the client is ultimately in charge of change. I value awareness, mindfulness and the process of living out a personal story that is based on strengths and hopefulness. Above all, I believe that if people feel respected and cared for they are capable of growth and moving through even the most difficult times.

I am passionate about working with individuals who feel disconnected from parts of themselves. Perhaps you are highly logical but struggle to identify or feel emotions. Or maybe you feel emotions so intensely that your sense of self gets lost. I use various modalities including narrative therapy, mindfulness, and the use of symbols and metaphors to assist in the discovery of a more expansive self where there is love, again or for the first time, for rejected parts.

I'm an Italian-/Irish-American, cis-, queer, always-aspiring-to-be-justice-doing, tarot-card-pulling art witch and half-assed-Buddhist who also happens to be a therapist. A professional artist, teacher and mentor of artists for almost twenty years before becoming a therapist, I offer my full authentic self (this may involve some swearing). I am a solidarity worker. This is transformative change work that values your inherent wisdom and lived experience. My work is truly affirming, rooted in the idea that unconditional love for ourselves, when combined with our innate creativity and knowing, is the strongest healing power we have.

My door is open to anyone who wants to talk. Sometimes it can be hard to know exactly what our feelings are, or what changes would be possible or meaningful. In a safe, non-judgmental space, we can work together to get at these experiences, find words for them, and understand how they fit into overall patterns of living. By digging deeper, and compassionately exploring our pasts, we become better able to live in the present.

I believe therapy can be a space to try on new ways of thinking and being, building insight and self-awareness so you can overcome blocks to creating the life you deeply desire. You can expect me to work hard to understand you and your history, offering an equal mix of nurturing, education and clear sighted perspective. We’ll work together to chart a vision for the road ahead, noting areas for growth, needed skills, and current strengths and resources. In session, and in life, my style is informal, warm, playful and compassionate. I bring a body-positive, sex-positive, feminist and anti-oppressive lens to my work.

When I think about my ideal clients, I think about all the folks I used to serve as a sex educator. Having spent the past 10+ years in sex education, I believe that many of us carry cultural stigma due to sex negative ideals perpetrated by our society. As a therapist I specialize in working with: Kinky clients, non-monogamous clients, clients that work within the sex industry, and clients that are figuring out their sexuality. My ideal clients are looking for a therapist that is affirming of their relationship with sexuality and who will not shame you for your sexual identity.

Often a question asked prior to counseling is, am I thriving or simply surviving? Individuals question their life path and need help to figure out where to start exploring. We work together to identify strengths, areas of growth, and both are used to help cultivate a fulfilling life experience. Clients may feel there is a mismatch between their head and hearts so we also work to connect them which in-turn causes less uncertainty and confusion in life choices.

I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW 23383) and psychotherapist, with a focus on issues related to human sexuality. Connection, intimacy, desire, love, and joy are the things in life that enrich our human experience. When we struggle with these, life can feel very lonely. I believe that you have endless potential, but sometimes life can get in the way. My hope is to get some of the muck out of the way so you can be your best self on any given day.

I enjoy seeing a wide variety of clients as I am able to offer them some unique perspectives to improve and change their current situation. It is my hope that our work together will challenge you to grow in ways you imagined and in some you do not. I have been a pastor in the Lutheran church and that gives me some unique abilities to help you utilize your faith as a strength. Although faith is not a prerequisite to counseling, I offer faith based counseling for those who have spirituality as one of their resources. I also see the value of animals in the lives of my clients and we offer a pet friendly environment.

You're sure the average therapist can't handle or accept you, because that's what you get everywhere else you go. School, work, almost everywhere, it's been an uphill struggle to fit in and feel understood -- IF you even bother anymore. If you DO find YOUR people, YOUR tribe, you spend the whole time secretly terrified they'll figure out you're not good enough and kick you out. You've been burned a few too many times, which just reinforces your belief that you'll never belong. All that rejection and pain sits in your body and spirit, grinding you down every day. But there's still part of you that believes you can find your place.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Minneapolis?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
