I focus on adults of all ages who are experiencing depression, anxiety, life transitions, grief and loss as well as those trying to understand relationships and the events that have shaped them. I hope to provide a safe environment in which to develop and explore insights that will encourage and enable growth and well-being. I will endeavor to help identify motivations, desires and personal ethics and the facility to express them. My frame of reference is largely psychodynamic (meaning that the unconscious mind affects conscious feelings, thoughts and behavior) but may draw from other orientations when suitable.

I strive to help clients balance change and acceptance in their lives. We cannot change what we do not accept. Gaining insight into childhood dynamics and attachment styles provides a foundation to understand current problematic behavioral patterns. Change is then possible through learning new skillful behaviors. This same approach is effective in helping families find balance in restructuring the family hierarchy, especially in situations in which an adolescent has become elevated in the family system. Changing behaviors through changing the ways we interact with ourselves and others is the core of my treatment approach.

Things have been hard. Emotions and divisions are high among couples, families, communities and social interaction has decreased in a big way. So much has changed and much of it beyond our control. Now is the time to unlock inherent coping skills you may not know you possess. I am available to help you identify and develop these skills then learn to incorporate new, proven strategies that help people cope with a quickly changing environment. In my sessions, we’ll look at the changes affecting you. We’ll navigate them together so, on the other side, you come out a stronger, healthier person.

You probably don't need more insight, you need change. From the outside, things look like they’re working. But certain patterns keep showing up. You procrastinate on work that matters to you. You replay conversations after they’re over. You might choose partners who need fixing or feel stuck between pushing yourself harder and feeling exhausted. People-pleasing, perfectionism, staying in control may have helped you get to where you are but now those patterns can start creating pressure in relationships, work, and daily life.

I love working through challenging situations with people and I have found that most issues can be resolved over the course of a few weeks or months. My sessions are usually about 70 minutes because that's how long a complete and satisfying discussion takes. I don't intend to see you for nearly as long or as often as you think, and you might be surprised at the range of things I want to talk about. Your life is a lot more than your presenting complaint.

I call my practice Clinical Holistic Inner Awareness Therapy because it integrates mind, body, emotions and spirit into the healing process. This holistic approach combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, solution focused therapy, mindfulness and somatic practices with the goal of healing yourself, your relationships, and your life. This therapeutic approach involves becoming aware of the conditioned protective beliefs that are formed by past traumatic events and then reframing them into more accurate, functional beliefs in the present.

This is a trying time. Support is vital to living a full life. My approach is one of mentorship, not typical therapy. I am walking alongside you in life's journey, in addressing the big questions of who am I? And, what am I to do with this one precious life? Especially in the face of endless distractions, world crisis and basic relationships. I especially like working with teens and young adults, exploring these questions and issues. Sometimes we just need someone to back us up and reflect our personhood, engage our integrity and connect us to our deeper knowing. I guide an experience of connection that enables one to thrive.

I work well with clients who are motivated to change their lives. Often, our greatest challenges come during times of major life transitions. Through active listening and genuine empathy, I help my clients focus upon the inherent solutions to their most pressing problems. Motivation to change comes with the willingness to look closely and investigate the stories we tell ourselves. Often I discover with my clients that their oldest and most damaging internal stories are simply not true. By having a fellow human who is open and fully present witness our lives, we can discover the very real possibility for greater health and happiness.

Many of my clients are insightful, caring people who find themselves repeating the same relationship patterns, struggling with boundaries, carrying the effects of past experiences, or feeling stuck despite knowing what they “should” do. I work with adults and couples navigating anxiety, trauma, ADHD, grief, addiction and recovery, relationship challenges, and life transitions. Together, we explore the deeper patterns influencing emotions, behaviors, and relationships while building practical tools that support meaningful, lasting change.

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
