After over 50 years of experience working with children, adolescents and adults in settings as diverse as prison and preschool, I have come to the conclusion that the root of most psychological suffering is a discrepancy between who we really are and who we have been expected to become or expect ourselves and others to be. This discrepancy between the "Self" and the personality we develop causes immense suffering within individuals, between individuals and in the culture as a whole. My goal is to help clients find their own truth or "Self" and live their lives from that place.

Sometimes it is difficult to make sense of thoughts and feelings, especially when many of us are told not to listen to what is happening inside. People seek therapy because they want to have a more satisfying life, and have been unable to achieve their goals due to internal and external stresses. It is difficult to discover what we already know and to bring that knowledge usefully into the world in the midst of the incessant demands of everyday life. I work with adults, adolescents and families on anxiety, depression and interpersonal problems that cause them concern. I find it very rewarding, working together toward a richer life.

I provide individual psychotherapy, couples counseling, and career guidance. Individual psychotherapy offers the chance to solve problems and chart new directions in life. You can free yourself from restrictive patterns of the past, develop emotional balance in the present, and enjoy new growth possibilities for the future. In psychotherapy, these goals come within reach through the conscious examination of life patterns. They come to realization through the careful encouragement of human potential. As you develop a subtler awareness of your own thoughts, emotions, and communication patterns, you can learn to change your life.

Are you interested in mindfulness or already have a meditation practice? My clients are often spiritually curious, fascinated by life's big questions, and willing to meditate. I support you on your journey, and we rely upon your innate tools of contemplative introspection to gain insight. My therapeutic approach focuses largely on shining the light of awareness on our thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Mindfulness helps us to catch the subtle inner-workings of mind and body. By developing awareness, and finally acceptance, of our whole life, we can ultimately find a deeper sense of purpose and more fulfilling relationships.

You know the road to peace lies both in healing the past, and also moving forward. Addressing trauma feels empowering but overwhelming. Moving forward feels exciting, but potentially superficial. You want a therapist who can do both: heal the past, and take charge of the future. But there's another issue- you don't know which therapist to pick. You've had a bad therapist in the past, or heard about terrible experiences of your friends and family. You want to make sure that whoever you start working with, is professional, responsible, and effective.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
