It can feel overwhelming to live with loud internal chatter while still showing up for our lives every day. Let’s focus on what you CAN do, which is to learn to quiet the “crazy" or “too much” or “not enough” labels and start really befriending yourself in all of your wisdom and complexity. It is from this place of integration that you can learn to approach all manner of challenges with clarity, calm and courage. My role is to offer pathways and perspectives that help transform that dialogue. Equally importantly, I'll be there to gently encourage and stick by you as you address your goals at your own pace, and in your chosen way.

Now accepting new clients! I'm an art therapist and counselor in training at 1A Counseling, offering both art therapy and traditional counseling. While some clients enjoy working with creative materials, others prefer conversation alone; both approaches are equally welcome. Whether or not we choose to create art in session, I always approach therapy as an inherently artistic space; one where you can imagine new possibilities, and where life itself can become a creative project.

My role is to support you in exploring the unique system of your psyche so you may experience greater agency, connection, and self-trust in your life. I believe each person carries an innate capacity to heal. Many of my clients are working through depression and anxiety related to trauma, grief, or major transitions. I enjoy supporting artists, students, parents, caregivers, and perinatal clients; those curious about unearthing old (often inherited) patterns to create personal and systemic change.

My intention is to provide space, time, and creative outlet for you to process your thoughts, sensations, and emotions. I work with a diversity of adults experiencing relationship issues, grief, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, and those seeking inner growth. I value working with teens and adults in a supportive non-judgmental way. I assist people who may be challenged with shame, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, substance use issues/recovery, communication issues, parent/child relationship difficulties, trauma, lack of self-care, and low self-esteem. Often people are struggling with something in their lives that is out of balance or going through a transition and reinventing themselves. Basically, I help people find their way again. I am a LGBTQ+ affirming, and gender-affirming therapist. I am also a culturally responsive and social justice-oriented therapist.

My office is a safe place to talk about difficult things with no judgement, no matter who you are. Loneliness, worry, grief, loss, alcohol/drug misuse, and sadness are very common feelings and experiences. We all attempt to find relief from such pain and sometimes the relief is helpful but not necessarily healthy. I collaboratively work with people, including professionals in the helping field, to experience their discomfort with far more ease by using sound therapeutic modalities and coping skills. Along the way I will also help you realize that you are far more resourceful and capable than you may currently believe.

Two types of clients like me best: First- those with debilitating anxiety, PTSD, OCD, or specific phobias; suffering from fear, perfectionism, intrusive thoughts/memories, avoidance and shame. For clients wanting demanding, but short-term resolution, I offer intensive treatment, meeting up to 2-3 times weekly, resolving symptoms in under a month. Second- clients wanting general support, guidance, or mentorship with shame, depression, purposelessness, emotional regulation, and communication. I use a combination of cognitive, somatic, and compassion-based interventions, sprinkling in IFS techniques for good measure!

Many of us have lived through hard and painful life experiences. For some of us, the physical and emotional memory of those experiences keep us locked in a state of shame, anxiety, fear and loneliness (this experience is often labeled with a variety of diagnoses: PTSD, Complex PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, ADHD). It can seem impossible to create and sustain meaningful, fulfilling and nurturing relationships (including the one with yourself!) from an isolated and fearful place. If you are seeking to feel better and create healthy and sustainable changes in your life, this may be the work for you.

My approach is warm and present. I trust in your judgment in the therapeutic process, and view each individual as the expert in their own life. I’ve worked in the mental health field in Northern New Mexican communities for a decade. My approach is trauma informed, strengths based, and includes EMDR, family systems therapy, somatic mindfulness, narrative therapy, and techniques from Gabor Mate’s Compassionate Inquiry approach. I use humor when it fits. I believe our relationships with nature, community, spirituality, and creativity can be primary parts of the healing process.

The current global crisis is stressful. For many of us it may be reactivating old layers of unresolved trauma, that shows up as chronic anxiety, dread, helplessness, relationship challenges, shame, or a shutting down to life and love, fueling unhealthy coping strategies. I believe we all have an innate capacity to heal from adversity. I support you to turn towards your symptoms with openness and curiosity so they can become a doorway to greater healing, growth and new possibility. I hope to empower and inspire you to heal and grow from past trauma. "There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in"( L. Cohen)

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?
In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?
The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?
An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?
It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?
HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?
A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?
Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?
Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?
Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy. Learn more about Insurance Coverage and Finding Affordable Therapy
