I am a person-centered clinician, & utilize talk therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), and somatic, psychoeducation, CBT, & Internal
Family Systems
techniques to aid in client’s exploration and healing.
For each of us, life is not without change, loss, transition, even trauma, and the emotional difficulties that result. And we heal and transform by way of supportive connection, internally, environmentally, and relationally. I am inspired by the subtle ways in which providing a safe, compassionate and nonjudgmental space allows for a client’s inner wisdom, insights, and empowerment to emerge and for life’s transitions to be eased. I work to provide a sanctuary to process, be witnessed in, and build helpful skills for dealing with loss & grief, transition, emotional distress such as anxiety and depression, and trauma.

Somatic Experiencing,
IFS
and Tension/Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE) are three somatic modalities I have extensive experience providing.
Talk therapy can be helpful, but sometimes it's just not enough. Maladaptive patterns of stress, trauma, anxiety, and depression lie in our bodies. You and I will untangle these problematic patterns to get to the root of your pain together. Our sessions will allow you to metaphorically dip your toe into the pain and then always come back to safety. In this way you are challenged to grow in a slow, safe manner.

I have found approaches such as Jungian psychology, psychosynthesis, behavior modification, cognitive behavioral therapy, gestalt therapy, mindfulness and Internal
Family Systems
to be very useful.
After over 50 years of experience working with children, adolescents and adults in settings as diverse as prison and preschool, I have come to the conclusion that the root of most psychological suffering is a discrepancy between who we really are and who we have been expected to become or expect ourselves and others to be. This discrepancy between the "Self" and the personality we develop causes immense suffering within individuals, between individuals and in the culture as a whole. My goal is to help clients find their own truth or "Self" and live their lives from that place.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal
Family Systems
(
IFS
), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) are sound and evidenced-based treatments I use.
My office is a safe place to talk about difficult things with no judgement, no matter who you are. Loneliness, worry, grief, loss, alcohol/drug misuse, and sadness are very common feelings and experiences. We all attempt to find relief from such pain and sometimes the relief is helpful but not necessarily healthy. I collaboratively work with people, including professionals in the helping field, to experience their discomfort with far more ease by using sound therapeutic modalities and coping skills. Along the way I will also help you realize that you are far more resourceful and capable than you may currently believe.

While I have training in trauma therapy, CBT, EMDR, DBT,
IFS
, Gestalt, and mindfulness, research shows that it's the therapeutic relationship that's crucial for healing.
Therapy is like a road trip: You need a destination, a map, and a vehicle. In therapy, you choose the destination- Where do you want to go or grow? Every week, we'll track how your last week went. If life is getting better, we're on track! If it's not improving, we change directions. And no more asking "is this working?"! That is our map. Finally, our vehicle is our professional relationship. Research shows that your comfort is the most important part of therapy! While I can't promise you we'll have an instant "click", I can promise to use your weekly feedback to continually improve our sessions. That way, each week gets better.

Life brings us experiences which cause us stress, stretch our capacity to cope. We respond with depression and anxiety. We resort to ineffective behaviors such as substance use, attempting to maintain our stability. The impact on us can be devastating and we can spiral out of control, often resulting in a disruption in our relationships, ability to work, ability to manage tasks and affairs and our ability to find satisfaction or meaning in our lives. Using mindfulness based approaches and Internal
Family Systems
to remove blocking emotions and beliefs can help find balance and promote healing.

By addressing the symptoms that are stored in in your body/mind from trauma I will teach you how to transform physical discomfort, along with judgmental beliefs you may hold about yourself using body-centered psychotherapies including
IFS
& EMDR.
Are you someone who values loving and supportive relationships? Do you wish to have a nourishing and intimate relationship, but repeatedly date the same type of person you were trying to get away from? Do you feel anxious, overwhelmed, numb, irritable, or disconnected from yourself &others? Do you struggle with flashbacks, insomnia, chronic headaches, or panic attacks? You may be experiencing symptoms of relational or complex trauma. Our physical & mental health can be impacted by childhood abuse, neglect, or unmet emotional needs, and can make it difficult to have a healthy relationship with our self and others.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.
How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.
Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.
How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
