Many of us struggle with physical illness, emotional pain or relationship problems. Sometimes life looks fine on the outside, but we hunger for something more. That feeling of emptiness can lead to depression, anxiety, addiction, physical illness or other problems that seem overwhelming. But the answers are there, because inside your heart is a wellspring of wisdom and love. By uncovering and clearing the causes of distress, our own inner light can shine through. I offer a safe and nurturing space, along with practical skills to uncover the deep inner peace, health and happiness that are buried in your heart.

The people I work with often come to me because they are looking to gain insight into emotional patterns, address difficult dynamics, and develop more balanced relationships with themselves or others. Together we paint a picture of their life stories, work to integrate the various aspects of themselves, and move towards the life they want to be living. We take the time to explore the context and history of the problem or symptom they are experiencing in order to better address it. I work with people of all ages and backgrounds and promote authentic expression and reflection in the therapy room.

I work with clients who may be struggling with symptoms of depression, dysregulation, chronic illness and trauma.
The chaos, pain, anxiety, depression and dysregulation are just main characters in your unscripted movie, trying to tell your story. Perhaps you’ve learned to normalize everything around you to survive and function the best way you know how. But behind those closed doors, deep inside you struggle to function, to feel safe, belong and just find your authentic you. Many of my clients come to me feeling overwhelmed, feeling exhausted or hopeless after therapy that hasn’t helped. I believe healing is your inherent right. Feeling whole again, reconnect with your purpose, and find peace along with a new purpose.

I believe therapy is a place where you can show up just as you are — to be seen, heard, and understood. When you feel safe enough to explore even the darker or more difficult places within, real change can happen. Many people seek therapy during times of transition or when they feel a deeper calling for growth and healing. Therapy offers a supportive space to slow down, breathe, and share your story without judgment. It’s a chance to uncover patterns that may no longer serve you and discover new ways to move forward with greater ease.

Pajama Forward Therapist here! If white knuckling, self shaming, and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps worked, you’d be “cured” a billion times over. It doesn’t. At least not for me or people whose brains are different. Our minds race and it feels impossible to turn off and rest. Sometimes we use substances or other behaviors in a harmful way just to get through the day. There’s more to life out there. A more peaceful and meaningful life is possible. We need to go deeper and get to the root of things. I’ll go with you. Unable to take insurance.

Are you looking for a way out or a way in? While I fully endorse a symptom management approach (reducing stress, decreasing problem behaviors, renewing a sense of purpose), the real struggle comes in determining the root cause of dis-ease. In unique ways better and worse parents, siblings, spouses, partners, children, friends and coworkers are all impactful in the unfolding of personality. Giving attention to these delicate relationships is essential to understanding how patterns of emotional reactivity and retreat can emerge. Effective talk therapy provides space for attunement with needs met and unmet, for safety, for recognition.

I appreciate how difficult the process of choosing a therapist can be. When we are feeling hurt, overwhelmed, and vulnerable finding the right "fit" for therapy is essential. I believe that therapy is a powerful opportunity to exam what is, or is not, working in our lives. We all have the capacity to meet the challenges and struggles life will inevitably bring, but sometimes we need assistance to see what the next right steps are for us to move forward. If you are seeking a compassionate listener who will non-judgmentally assist you in making sense of life, I am the therapist you are looking for.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
