I work with adolescents and adults struggling through depression,
anxiety
, trauma, grief, substance abuse, college and life transition anxieties and cultural issues.
Sometimes it is difficult to make sense of thoughts and feelings, especially when many of us are told not to listen to what is happening inside. People seek therapy because they want to have a more satisfying life, and have been unable to achieve their goals due to internal and external stresses. It is difficult to discover what we already know and to bring that knowledge usefully into the world in the midst of the incessant demands of everyday life. I work with adults, adolescents and families on
anxiety
, depression and interpersonal problems that cause them concern. I find it very rewarding, working together toward a richer life.

Individuals and couples who come with conflicts,
anxiety
, grief, or trauma often can experience a shift within the first couple of sessions.
When you, whether as a couple or an individual, commit to take responsibility for your growth and development, I listen with compassion and interest to develop a proactive therapeutic program to help each of you grow to your greatest potential as an individual (and a couple). Often people aren't aware they have unmet need, wants, and desires. Healing often comes after identifying, accepting, and learning how to ultimately realize those desires and needs. By helping individuals, couples, and families overcome conflicts, trauma, and
anxiety
, they are able to successfully achieve some of their deepest desires and feel fulfilled.

, depression, grief/loss, substance use issues/recovery, communication issues, parent/child relationship difficulties, trauma, lack of self-care, and low self-esteem. Often people are struggling with something in their lives that is out of balance or going through a transition and reinventing themselves. Basically, I help people find their way again. I am a LGBTQ+ affirming, and gender-affirming therapist. I am also a culturally responsive and social justice-oriented therapist.

I have experience working with individuals, couples and groups living with:
anxiety
, depression, grief and loss, PTSD and Complex Trauma, and relational dynamics.
Many of us have lived through hard and painful life experiences. For some of us, the physical and emotional memory of those experiences keep us locked in a state of shame,
anxiety
, fear and loneliness (this experience is often labeled with a variety of diagnoses: PTSD, Complex PTSD,
Anxiety
, Depression, ADHD). It can seem impossible to create and sustain meaningful, fulfilling and nurturing relationships (including the one with yourself!) from an isolated and fearful place. If you are seeking to feel better and create healthy and sustainable changes in your life, this may be the work for you.

Do you feel anxious? Depressed? We are living in a very unstable world right now and so feeling grounded and centered is especially challenging. Stressful times like these activate our nervous systems and can awaken old traumas,
fears
, and
anxiety
and can cause depression. Finding that place inside where you are fundamentally okay no matter what is essential to the happy, healthy life you desire and so deserve. Believe it or not, it is possible.

The world is changing rapidly and increased levels of
anxiety
and stress are common.
Things have been hard. Emotions and divisions are high among couples, families, communities and social interaction has decreased in a big way. So much has changed and much of it beyond our control. Now is the time to unlock inherent coping skills you may not know you possess. I am available to help you identify and develop these skills then learn to incorporate new, proven strategies that help people cope with a quickly changing environment. In my sessions, we’ll look at the changes affecting you. We’ll navigate them together so, on the other side, you come out a stronger, healthier person.

We start by clarifying what your life will be like if we decide to work together and are successful. Then we ferret out the strategy you used to stay safe in your family and culture of origin. What you did then was useful (e.g. hiding, fighting, running away, lying) but likely no longer helps to manifest the life you long for today. Changing once useful ways of adopting is challenging and requires patience. Your primitive brain says "Don't change what kept you safe". Challenging that message creates
anxiety
so we practice ways to handle it.

I am very proficient working with
Anxiety
& Phobias (CCATP certificate).
Many people seek counseling during a life crisis. Depression &
Anxiety
are natural reactions associated with Crisis. It is my professional/personal belief that in every major crisis - there are two events co-occurring. One, is a perceived threat to the SELF; and two, a crucial point when something begins in one's personal growth. Often - this is an opportunity for deeper, spiritual insight. Another important aspect of therapy is finding someone you feel you can relate to; I have led a full, rich life with my travels & my relationships. Visit my webpage: www.James-Jordan-PhD.com/

Are you are at a crossroads in your life? Do you feel you're living inauthentically or that some essential part of yourself got lost along the way? Oftentimes we hide complex parts of ourselves due to fear and, in so doing, experience depression and
anxiety
. Self-defeating belief patterns and narratives, often stemming from early conditioning, can trap us in habitual patterns of negative thinking, emotional extremism, and problematic behaviors. We then can see ourselves and others only through these distorted lenses. While appearing successful externally; internally a different story is told.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
