I specialize in working with women and
teen
girls. If you or your
teenager
are feeling emotionally unstable, vulnerable or anxious, I have tools and skill sets for you. In the early years of my career, I worked as a substance abuse counselor and still hold an independent license in that field. My work has evolved away from active addiction towards addressing the trauma and wounds that are associated with addictive processes. For teens that might be self harm, depression or anxiety, and for adult women it can manifest as perfectionism, anxiety, staying overly busy, or being self critical. These efforts to cope can all be upgraded!

I believe that everyone is different and responds to different forms of treatment. I enjoy working with anyone who wants to learn more about themselves and how to deal with their problems, whether in their families, their work, or their relationships.

I had a psychology practice in Austin for 20 years, relocating to Albuquerque in 2012. As an outgrowth of my continuing work with clients from Texas, I have developed a specialty in providing internet therapy. My specialties include eating disorders, complex mood disorders, personality disorders, recovery from narcissistic abuse, and helping families with "failure to launch" young adults. I also provide consultation to parents who are struggling with an oppositional
adolescent
or an adult child with ongoing difficulties. I provide both therapeutic and forensic psychological evaluations.

My ideal clients are those who are experiencing difficulties with blended family issues,
adolescent
development, trauma, grief and loss, separation and divorce. My role as a therapist is to facilitate a process of healing by partnering with each client. I believe it is essential to listen carefully to an individual, couple or family and develop a partnership that combines my training and experience as a practitioner with each persons unique capacity for healing and growth. Most importantly, the objective of intervention and caring is promoting the family's ability to support the passions and interests that exist in each individual.

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside awakes”. C.G. Jung. You are already whole. Everything you require to heal and thrive is already alive within you. When we are hurting it can be hard to look into our hearts; healing & wholeness seem impossible. Therapy can offer support, guidance, compassion, and a safe space for you to look within. Through therapy you can learn skills and develop practices that will put you in touch with your inner wisdom, resilience, and inspiration. Are you ready to begin your journey?

Counseling is my second career. I have always been in a helping profession and my journey to becoming a clinician began as a teacher. Helping others has always been a passion of mine whether it was in the classroom or in a counseling office. In every client that I have ever had the privilege to be a part of their journey, it has always been my sincere hope that I could at least plant a seed of hope and inspiration. I see clients with various issues. I focus on
teen
and women issues but do see individuals for many other issues, such as trauma and depression.

My work with individuals and families is grounded in helping to support the ever-changing process of growing, learning and finding a meaningful place within a family and the larger community. The challenges we face in an accelerated global culture seem extraordinarily complex for many of us who can often find ourselves overwhelmed with the demands of a non-stop, technology-driven lifestyle with unrealistic expectations. Slowing down long enough to to give needed attention to our priorities and goals can be difficult, but I'm confident that with some reflection and support we can find grounding and clarity as a path towards wellness.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
