I have always known that helping others is my purpose. My own personal life challenges and feeling that I was in a dark place pushed me a strong desire to understand myself and my feelings at a deeper level. I realized that I wanted to leave the world better than I had found it, and I wanted to do so by helping others to heal. My own healing journey brought me to help others through therapy. I use a strengths-based approach to help my clients ease the pain that they are experiencing, by not only being there and offering an empathetic ear, but by helping them to find the joy in life that they may have thought would be lost forever.

Are you experiencing fear, loneliness, anger, grief, chronic illness, or pain? Maybe you're transitioning or feeling un-rooted, on an edge, lost, anxious, and/or addicted? Our identities and perspectives are informed by how we relate to and make sense of these experiences. Knowledge of that we call 'self' is a continual and creative process, and includes relationship to the unconscious - the ever-moving parts of the psyche yet unknown to us. I help clients find focus and relax preconceived notions of how growth and healing occurs. This allows one to learn from their symptoms in order to ease suffering - to hold paradox.

I like to direct our attention away from what is wrong with people toward what can be improved between people. This leads to a lot of philosophical reflection, and laughter. (In fact I am writing a book about the philosophy of humor, and how it shows up in therapy.)

I believe that you are the expert of your own healing process. I provide space for in-depth exploration, offering compassion, curiosity, creativity, and resources. I work to align with you so that together we can address the factors that are impeding your well-being and growth. As we move through a time where it increasingly feels that the ground beneath us is shifting, my aim is to support you in not only coping with the challenges ahead, but thriving and moving forward as the empowered creator of your own story. Therapy is an opportunity to slow down and cultivate more authentic alignment with yourself, others, and your community.

After over 50 years of experience working with children, adolescents and adults in settings as diverse as prison and preschool, I have come to the conclusion that the root of most psychological suffering is a discrepancy between who we really are and who we have been expected to become or expect ourselves and others to be. This discrepancy between the "Self" and the personality we develop causes immense suffering within individuals, between individuals and in the culture as a whole. My goal is to help clients find their own truth or "Self" and live their lives from that place.

For over twenty years, I have been helping individuals navigate periods of depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, addictions and major life transitions. Some people come to therapy feeling discouraged, overwhelmed, or stuck; uncertain about what to do next. Others are seeking a deeper self-understanding, stronger relationships, and a healthier and more fulfilling way of living.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
