Perhaps you’re at a point where you are frustrated and tired of starting over with a new therapist. You’re tired of telling your story over and over again and not experiencing any relief. You’re tired of taking all these medications and being numb. And you’re tired of your past trauma disrupting your everyday life. Perhaps you’re wondering if you’re ever going to heal and feel better. You CAN heal. The therapist’s job is to help facilitate the healing process that lies within you. To heal from trauma, you don’t have to talk about the details of what has happened to you (unless you find it helpful).

My journey began in the 1990s, working with traumatized children through art, dance, and music, and evolved through training in neurofeedback and neuroscience.
I enjoy working with people across diverse backgrounds, and age groups spanning the lifetime. I work best with people who are willing to "dive in" to deep discovery about themselves and the world, people navigating life transitions and changes in the world outside them.

These days, just waking up is a nerve-wracking endeavor. Before your feet hit the floor, your mind is blitzed with a million “Oh, no’s” and “What if’s.” You peel yourself out of bed, but your every move is tense. It’s like you’re inching closer toward some disaster, even if you don’t know what it is. The tension and chaos build, leaving you too exhausted to live life on your terms. Instead, you’re like a prisoner, constantly living in a state of “fight or flight.” You suspect it has something to do with past trauma, but you’re not sure how to connect the dots. One thing’s for sure, though: You can’t keep on living like this...

I am an LGBTQIA+ ally and comfortable with different cultures and backgrounds. My goal is to make my clients feel safe and seen in session. My theoretical approach is psychodynamic, I relate much of my work towards family history and identifying balance within life. I pull a lot from Adlerian therapy, however this viewpoint does not shy me away from CBT/DBT/MI/and REBT.

I use mindfulness body based therapies, EMDR, child-parent psychotherapy, attachment therapy, art therapy and integrative eco therapy.
Everyone is unique and wants a life that is filled with vitality. Our influences and experiences throughout childhood until now, have given us a narrative that has defined our understanding of who we are. Some of these experiences have created fear and unbearable grief. With self-reflection, a deeper understanding of oneself, together we can work on healing and transformation.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
