My formal education, practice, and personal experiences have led me to specialize in identity exploration, gender, sexual assault /abuse/rape, sexuality, and anxiety.
Non-judgment and compassion are central to my professional belief system, as well as my personal one. As a counselor, I focus on creating a safe and trusting environment within the therapy room. I aim to create a space where, if just for an hour, a client can take off their armor and feel truly seen and understood. While I cater my treatment style to each client based on their own specific needs, I tend to incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Humanistic Therapy, and Art Therapy approaches most often.

This includes: substance use, trauma, mental health, survivors of sexual assault and sex offenders.
One of my biggest passions is helping those with trauma, anxiety or depression. Trauma comes in various forms and often times we haven’t processed the events. An ideal client is an individual who is motivated to become healthy and committed to making that happen.

Have you been through distressing life experiences (like abuse, neglect, or assault )? You may have upsetting memories and feel agitated, irritable, or wary; these trauma symptoms can interfere with relationships.
I help individuals gain self-confidence and create great relationships. I only work with people one-on-one because I’m dedicated to giving you personal, in-depth support throughout your relationship journey. That could include deciding whether to stay in a challenging relationship, navigating infidelity, recovering from heartbreak after a relationship ends, learning to enjoy being single, and/or navigating dating, commitment, and the evolution of new relationships. I can provide insight into current relationship challenges and help you develop stronger skills through training in mindfulness, empathy, communication, and boundaries.

Accepting clients! This is a crazy and uncertain time right now for all of us. Seems like everything we are used to doing has changed and is uncertain. You've spend as long as you can remember trying to keep it together, but it's becoming more difficult and let's face it, you're feeling overwhelmed and perhaps experiencing feelings you have never had before. You are lonely and isolated; perhaps even feeling a loss of independence or control, perhaps even suicidal. Whether you are a teen or an adult, let's work together to gain back as much normalcy in your life as possible.

Hi, my name is Christy Tackwell and I work with adults, teens and children in my private practice. I would say that I am eclectic and use both traditional and alternative forms of therapy such as Art Therapy. I believe in a good working relationship in order to build trust so that the client is comfortable. The client is accepted for who they are and where they are. I believe in creating a safe and confidential environment so that the person can move at his or her own pace towards their therapy goals. Identifying issues and possible solutions is very important.

"Apologies, I am not currently accepting new clients.".Many times in life we develop behaviors and patterns as a means to cope because this is all we have at the moment. Although these methods may no longer serve you, change is difficult. This is where therapy can offer the opportunity to heal painful wounds of the past, while developing healthier coping skills for today. I believe we all have the power to heal and overcome life's challenges, but sometimes need extra support and guidance along the way.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
