Many of my clients are survivors of trauma and I work extensively with narcissistic / borderline disorders and try to help clients understand themselves better.
NOW Accepting Blue Cross and United Plans. I am a dedicated clinician and I strive to create a strong, supportive space for clients who are interested in their inner work. I have worked with clients in severe emotional distress, and also with clients who just feel a need to "find a new path forward". Some of my clients come for brief intensive counseling during a crisis while others to do longer-term work on a quest for self-understanding and freedom from past painful experiences. I have extensive psychoanalytic training as well as experience in shorter-term modalities.

That constant feeling you’re justifying your existence. The exhaustion of code-switching, of making yourself smaller to feel safe, of checking all the right boxes only to feel like you don’t fit in any of them. If you’ve moved through the world with layered identities—as a BIPOC individual, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, or a survivor of unstable systems—I see you. This is your space to stop performing. My work is dedicated to helping you embrace your own complexity and find healing not by changing who you are, but by becoming more fully yourself. You deserve a place where every part of your story is welcome.

I know what it's like to feel stuck in the past. I know what it feels like to suspect that you are beyond help, or the capacity to heal. I know how scary those places can be. But the fact that you're here, means that you haven't lost hope. Welcome, and I am so happy you are here. Healing the mind can take many different forms. It can look like building a stronger and safer sense of Self. Or a deeper acceptance of all the "parts" that make your mind what it is. It often also means bringing our bodies into the story. Rewiring the brain with gentle compassion and patience takes time, but it is possible.

As a Licensed therapist, Ms. Barner is a creative and passionate mental health professional who believes that all individuals have the ability to learn and thrive successfully. Her therapeutic approach is confidential, supportive, and provides a safe place to talk about difficult things. She works on the belief that the person you are today is a combination of several factors. Some of these factors are early childhood and adult relationship experiences, genetic predisposition, and environmental factors. Her belief is that therapy is not a process that labels you, but an avenue that can help overcome life’s challenges.

You might feel overwhelmed by anxiety, mood swings, or the belief that you’re not good enough. Maybe your childhood is a blur—or filled with pain. You may feel alone, disconnected, or distant from family because of who you are or the life you’ve chosen. If surviving your past is wearing you down, we should talk. You don’t have to relive every detail to heal. I offer a warm, steady presence as we work together to help your nervous system find more safety, ease, and hope.

I am currently accepting clients. You know how sometimes you start out your life and think you know how it will go…and then it doesn’t. Sometimes that is when therapy and understanding yourself in a new way can be the most helpful.

Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.

How do therapists treat NPD?

By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.

Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?

Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.

How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?

It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
