Problem gambling is one of the most hidden addictions in the U.S. due to the shame and stigma associated with gambling problems. Many people still mistake problem gambling for a moral problem or simply see it as poor choice making, rather than understanding the complex brain hijacking that problem gambling is for some people who can’t quit. Several neurotransmitters including dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, opioids, to name a few, are acting simultaneously on the brain during problem gambling.

With 20 years in the recovery community, I've transitioned from a peer support volunteer to a licensed substance abuse associate (LSAA) with a BA in Psycho-Spirituality. My mission is to provide a safe place for individuals navigating substance misuse and associated challenges like trauma and mood disorders. Since my early twenties, I've been actively involved in support groups, starting with homeless LGBTQIA+ youth. This diverse experience has shaped my commitment to inclusivity and understanding, fostering a continuous journey of empathy and support. You can check out my book, The Recovery Warrior.

Are substances (drugs, alcohol, cigarettes) or behaviors and processes (food, gambling, gaming, sex) beginning to or already have interfered with your happiness, functionality, relationships and/or simply just stopped working to give you the relief they once did? Are you questioning the role these things play in your life and your relationship with them? Do the words; unbalanced, compulsion, lack of control, addiction or crazy come to mind when thinking of these elements of your life? Are anxiety and depression also part of this experience?

Within every one of us lies the potential and wisdom to live as joyfully and fulfilled as possible. While we cannot change the past and in some situations current stressors, we can develop strengths, strategies, and insight to better manage our responses in the present and future. As a strength-based, solution-focused provider, it is my purpose to help you gain awareness and control of thoughts, feelings, and possibly actions that prevent you from living the life you seek. Through culturally sensitive, compassionate, client-centered care, I will help you identify and reach your goals regardless of what they may be.

I believe the foundation of any therapeutic relationship is a safe and welcoming atmosphere where clients can be and express their authentic selves. As we go through our lives we may find ourselves burdened by our past, torn by difficult decisions, or struggling to let go of behaviors that do not serve us how we would like them to. In therapy we take a mindful approach of gentle curiosity to welcoming and communicating with parts of our being that have been hurt, neglected or unreasonably burdened and learn skills and techniques to manage inner turmoil successfully.

Individuals feel disconnected from their loved ones, their work and, most importantly, themselves when they experience trauma or abnormally high amounts of stress. They become anxious easily, they can be irritable, and they can relive traumatic events that can lead to life feeling completely unmanageable. Additionally, couples and families become 'stuck' when trauma, conflict, and other negative dynamics get in the way of vulnerability, communication, and the love that we crave from those close to us. Those caught in these painful patterns need support and the therapeutic process can be transformative.

It’s just a fact that humans will self-medicate their mental and physical health issues. I have been licensed as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC) in New Mexico since 2006. I have been working with substance use disorders for over 24 years. I was born and raised in East Los Angeles, CA to Mexican immigrants who instilled the importance of respecting others and not projecting superiority over anyone. Thus, I believe in not labeling people as, “addicts”, I leave it to the individual to identify such.

My therapeutic approach is strengths-based, and centered on the belief that with help, you can learn to think, feel and behave better. My therapeutic role is to promote enhanced self-awareness, encourage coping skills, and foster personal responsibility. These skills will enable you to respond better to adversity and maintain a healthier perspective on your difficulties. You will also realize that you CAN learn to stabilize and reassure yourself when problems arise (as they always do), and thereby work through them more effectively.

There is plenty of suffering in our world. Anxiety, depression and other mental ailments are on the rise. People feel more isolated than ever and thinking they might be the only person who feels the way they do. They suffer in silence. We suffer many times at the hands of our Ego. Ego wants this or doesn’t want that. We feel anxiety or bad mood and we do everything we can to push it away. We don’t want to feel it so we insulate ourselves from it. The paradox is that the more you push something away the stronger it gets. We have created strategies and defenses to keep ourselves moving but in the end they just don't work.
