Couples in significant distress want nothing more than genuine, lasting relief from their pain so that they can thrive again. Unfortunately, the vast majority of therapists have little to no training in treating couples - widely regarded as the most difficult population to treat. This often leads to unfocused, ineffective therapy potentially lasting years. It is far better to work with a trained specialist who provides efficient, effective therapy tailored for the unique needs of couples. Whether you are struggling with
infidelity
/
affairs
, high conflict, lack of intimacy, or other common challenges for couples, I can help.

I commonly see couples dealing with issues of
infidelity
, finances, communication, conflict and other issues.
My orientation is to work with both individuals and couples in a manner that considers our relatedness to life. With individuals struggling with anxiety, depression or work/life stress, I will take into account the relational factors contributing to the issues which may include environments, people, culture, expectations and roles. With couples, I consider the relational dynamics between each other, as we address ways to navigate distressing situations.

You've experienced something terrible in your life, and you cannot stop thinking about it. You can't sleep, and barely function throughout the day. Or maybe you function, but you're unhappy, stressed and anxious. Maybe you cover the pain with drugs, sex or alcohol. Trauma affects everyone- and everyone reacts in their own way. You want to be able to look forward to your day, your life and your relationships. If you've been through sexual trauma,
infidelity
, relational issues or have low self esteem, EMDR can help.

My focus with couples includes parenting challenges,
infidelity
, emotional estrangement, relational inequities, living with addiction and divorce.
Reaching out for a therapist is a courageous step on the path to change and personal growth. Oftentimes we are unable to make positive changes in our life because overwhelming emotions, negative thoughts and unproductive behavioral patterns block us from moving forward. Even when we know exactly what to do next, we can find ourselves unable to take the necessary steps to initiate change. My approach to therapy is collaborative, direct and compassionate. We will work together to address and contain your immediate challenges, to process unresolved issues and to help you find a deeper connection with the world around you.

A primary focus of my practice is to assist couples overcome problems and issues in their relationship. Problems of communication, conflict, emotional distance and sexual problems are all issues that can be productively addressed in therapy. Many couples begin therapy in crisis following an affair or at the brink of divorce. Others are disappointed in their relationship and know that there is more intimacy and satisfaction to be found with the partner they love. Intensives and extended sessions may be arranged on weekends or evenings in some circumstances.

Your intimate relationship can be one of the most important sources of joy, satisfaction and fulfillment in your life. However, issues may arise which upset that original harmony, and if left unaddressed, lead to a negative pattern of quarreling, difficult communication, and a loss of connection, trust and intimacy. In some cases, this negative spiral can further lead to depression, substance/behavioral addictions, or even an affair. I can provide you with the effective tools for identifying, addressing and resolving those challenging issues, and help you co-create a renewed sense of connection, intimacy and sacred partnership.

Are you worried about your future together? Fighting too much, too often, too intensely? Or the opposite: avoiding conflict for fear of getting lost in it. Conflicts that are avoided or are too long and too intense and too difficult to recover from will all weigh you down. You know that things can be easier: you know you could communicate more efficiently, smarter, and get to have fun together on the other side this. What you need then is a therapist who can diagnose communicational difficulties and engineer solutions that keep you out of the same trouble in the future.

How does therapy for infidelity work?
A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.
How long does therapy for infidelity take?
Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.
How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?
When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.
How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?
Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
