EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) PRACTITIONER (Level II)
GRIEF
RECOVERY SPECIALIST.
EMDR SINCE 2003. Traditional talk therapy often DOES NOT uncover and address the actual past complexities and traumas of a person's life that continue to have emotional effects causing present day anxiety, stress and depression. I offer Attachment Focused EMDR in an effective format which connects to the underlying memories and events that repeatedly surface blocking access to a sense of well being and trust in oneself. My form of therapy decreases the charge connected to negative experiences and moves clients into a more objective and positively focused framework (Parnell, 2007). I also offer CBT and
Grief
Recovery interventions.

Life has changed so much since the pandemic. Learning new ways to cope seems important for many people at this time. I believe that meaningful therapy is possible when you feel deeply heard, understood, and appreciated while you are experiencing challenges that may seem overwhelming. Your unique story is important to me and we can work together to try and make sense of it. I take time to listen and learn what is most helpful for your growth and well-being. This includes hearing about your strengths as well as your struggles. You are encouraged to share your ideas about what you hope to accomplish as we create goals together.

Anxiety, depression,

of meaning, and relational conflicts are but some of the ways a longing for authentic connection seeks our conscious and loving attention.
Relationships shape us. The experience of being seen, accepted, and understood by another is a basic human need that when not met can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, and other painful emotions. Transformation and healing happen in the moment and in the context of relationships. My approach is open, compassionate, non-pathologizing, relational, & somatic. Rooted in mindfulness, IPNB, & the body/mind connection, our work will also be infused with a healthy dose of humor when appropriate. I support people seeking to heal intergenerational trauma &
grief
& to weave authentic connections with themselves and with loved ones.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
