I am dedicated to providing therapy services that are based in trust and respect. I work with adults, elders, and teenagers ages 14 and up experiencing anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief and loss as well as substance use disorders and addiction. In addition, I provide couples therapy and family therapy . I also have extensive experience working with the IDD population. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I obtained my B.A. in psychology from Southern Illinois University. My interest in male/female relationships led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Liberty University. But I don’t only work with families. Families are comprised of two individuals who were reared in his/her family of origin from which they developed their worldview and values. Two unique individuals come together, bringing their experiences with them into the relationship. These differences can result in conflict. My job is to help them see how the conflict arose and constructive ways to resolve

If you’re not sure of what that is we can work together to find some of those comforts to help in your day to day life.

My experiences as a military dependent, 9 year military veteran (Air Force 3 years and USMCR 6 years) and an Army Spouse for almost 16 years, has given me the experience needed to relate to the unique needs/lifestyle of the military family .
As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LPCC) and military veteran, my focus is to serve other military veterans and their families. Although serving the military community is my primary focus, I am certainly open and available to others seeking guidance and support. Whether you are dealing with the stress of a recent deployment, transitioning out of the military, having separation anxiety, communication/relationship issues, or dealing with PTSD, there is no need to navigate these life struggles on your own. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness and counseling can help.

I am a sole practitioner in private practice. My focus is on helping adults struggling with depression and anxiety, those who have a history of trauma, and those with relationship problems – whether it’s with friends, co-workers, family members or intimate partners. In addition to working on short-term symptom reduction, I rely on an in-depth approach. This type of therapy provides insight into the dynamics behind one’s emotions and behavior and can lead to greater self-confidence, self-acceptance and lasting change.

I would love to connect you or your family member/s to discuss your hopes and needs.
Your eldering can and should be vibrant and happy. For a long time, we believed development stopped when an individual entered adulthood. This is far from true. Not all the transitions of middle and later life are easy or welcome. No one has to feel depressed, alone, bored, isolated and forgotten. I support individuals, couples, families and caregivers as they navigate the important transitions of later life. Later life is a time of dynamic personal change and growth.

Although, I've mentioned specific modalities, my specialties also include working with clients who are looking for help making changes, people who want to "get in and get on" with their life, and individuals with complicated family of origin issues.
I'm Jen Stephenson, a practicing clinician since 2011. I have experience working with individuals, couples, and families age 3-93. My most recent season working with individuals who have experienced trauma, as well as both teens and adults who identify as LGBTQIA+ has become my passion. I use an eclectic approach with elements of CBT, MI, ACT, and SFBT. I work well with clients of an array of backgrounds and find that a "curious approach" to life, and what is troubling you, has proven to be a great starting point for most people. I am fascinated with the human condition.

You deserve positive self-care on a regular basis. Weekly sessions help you see how early family relationships contribute to your current self esteem, success or struggles. Feeling depressed, worried, stressed, misunderstood, confused or under-appreciated? Support for integrating personal skills for healing trauma and grief recovery is primary. Communication/social skills will open doors. Clients build self-trust and confidence. Together we solidify your emotional stability, and grow your fulfilling and satisfying relationships at home and work. Making time for yourself and learn healthy boundaries are essential.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
