I work with individuals, couples, and families from children through older adults, offering fully virtual sessions throughout New Mexico.
Seeking therapy is one of the most compassionate things you can do for yourself. We all carry experiences that shape how we move through the world, how we cope, how we connect, and how we see ourselves. Those experiences do not make you broken or beyond help. They make you human, and they make this work meaningful. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and I offer a warm, identity-affirming space where you feel safe to slow down, get curious, and explore what you need.

Feeling the silent weight of unsaid things? Or perhaps, as a dedicated professional, you're shouldering immense responsibility while forging your own path. Finding someone who truly gets it can feel overwhelming. My promise is simple: I'm not here to fix you. I'm here to understand, to hold space, and to walk alongside you as you sort through the messy, brilliant, deeply human parts of your story. My work creates a safe harbor—a relational, trauma-informed space where you are seen not as a problem, but as a whole person. Here, you don't need to perform or pretend. You just need to be exactly where you are, and we'll start there.

Greetings from Frank Smith, LMFT. Most behavior is learned and results in patterns that can be positive and life affirming or negative and self-defeating. I can help you process past emotional wounds that will help create a pathway to better emotional health. Let me be your psychological navigator to help you let go of the past and have a better and more fulfilling life.

My journey as a therapist has been deeply rooted in advocacy, support, and empowerment within the LGBTQ+ community and of communities of color. With a commitment to fostering inclusivity and understanding, I have cultivated a practice that prioritizes the voices and experiences of those often marginalized and historically underserved. I recognize the importance of culturally competent care and the impact of systemic inequalities in mental health. I provide a culturally responsive approach to therapy, addressing issues such as identity, discrimination, intergenerational trauma, and acculturation.

I am currently learning Internal Family Systems to increase my capacity for working with a variety of individuals.
Anxiety and depression gives us bad stories that we tell ourselves over and over again; in therapy, we will work together to rewrite those stories, weaving a new narrative with better truths that encourage your growth. I want to help you find the connections in your story to answer the questions about yourself that have been making it difficult to move forward on your own path. Working to untangle our pasts and how they inform our present can be intimidating but it allows us to navigate a better course for our future.

Therapy is a very personal and intimate process. I believe a therapist should be a bit less clinical than other health professionals, while at the same time providing a safe and comfortable, yet professional atmosphere. My practice is designed to allow clients to truly be at ease with me, which is one of the most important steps in the completion of successful therapy.

My background includes years of working with justice-involved families, crisis support, children, young adults, and parents/caregivers.
Currently accepting new clients! My practice is focused on children ages 3-12 and their parents who are seeking support with co-regulation. I enjoy working closely with caregivers who are interested in building skills while also reflecting on their life experiences. I find art, play, and other creative forms of expression helpful to use in this space together. I also work with teens and adults who are experiencing difficulties with anxiety, stress, and peer relationships. I believe therapy is a collaborative experience which allows us to discover and implement methods of healing that extend beyond our sessions.

At a certain point in a person's struggles, they are ready to break free from old patterns of destructive, negative, or compulsive behavior- even if they’re unsure how. They’re seeking relief from distress and pain but struggle to find ways to achieve that relief. Their goals include improving emotional health, nurturing relationships, and creating a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling. I offer a supportive and non-judgmental space to explore, learn, and grow through a process of supportive reflection that allows the patient to recognize unconscious drives and elicit intrinsic motivation to change authentically.

We change every day. Sometimes those changes are big and leave us feeling uncertain or knocked down. And sometimes they are so small, we barely notice them. My clients are often looking for help to resolve old changes they haven't embraced or struggling with current or future change. Whether a new career, retiring, losing a loved one, moving to a new place, or making an identity transition, change can be upsetting and frightening! I help my clients understand the change process, and to settle into their strength so they can take back control of their lives, leading to better mood, less anxiety, and greater life satisfaction.

FAQ - About Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
