Trauma can come from a single incident, like a divorce or a car accident, or from stressors that span several years, such as physical or sexual abuse or parental neglect.
After 40 years of practice I still love what I do. My work is personal-only I answer calls, make appointments, greet you at the door. I want to know who you are, how I can help, what we can accomplish together. My response to you is always original and addresses your unique pain. I am trained in several theoretical models and I use them to guide my practice, but your personal struggle is the focus of our work together. You can come alone, with your partner, or family.

Rachel A. Coleman, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist who works primarily with couples. Her first goal is to give couples a framework that de-catastrophizes what they're going through, followed by development of a path toward new stability and connection in their relationship. She strongly believes if a couple can make sense of things together, see each other more clearly and kindly and work together to manage challenges, their relationship can become a source of tremendous well-being. Although most of her work at Life Change is with couples, she also works with some individual clients.

Conveniently located in Albuquerque's West Side, we specialize in anxiety, depression, trauma, domestic violence, women's issues, and relationships. We believe that the most important aspect of therapy is the client's relationship with the therapist - the client needs to trust the therapist and feel comfortable. A significant piece of feedback I get from clients is that they not only look forward to our appointments, but it feels truly conversational and as if talking to a friend. I am not going to be textbooky, instead you are going to get a person who can relate, be real, and also highlight what you're already doing well and ways to tweak towards progress. I am a dedicated ally for the LGBTQ+ community and committed to engaging in open, honest conversations about anti-racism and politics.

Hello! My name is Kevin, and I am accepting new clients. I want to help my clients engage in their life in a way that they are proud of and happy with. I like clients who want help with their goals, to unpack and understand their own thoughts or emotions, and people who are recovering from trauma, childhood, experiences, or are just looking to reorient themselves to better handle their day-to-day. They dream big, and want to live life to the fullest. They want to be more in alignment with their authentic selves.

The idea of going to therapy can feel very intimidating, you might not have had the best experience in the past, you might feel overwhelmed with where to start or feel completely ready to start therapy. Overall, it can be hard to be vulnerable with feelings and emotions. If you are already looking into therapy, that means part of yourself believes that you are capable of feeling more empowered in yourself and also deserve a place to feel listened too. These feelings are all normal and welcome, and I will meet you where you are at

Welcome to my practice. During challenging times, it is not uncommon to feel anxiety, depression, and maybe even hopeless. I encourage you to not give up hope. You deserve to feel more peace and even joy. I want to praise you for reaching out for help. Some of the therapies I offer provide clients the opportunity to heal grief, resolve relationship problems, and process past trauma. Many clients report they notice more emotional balance and relief after several sessions.

The life you built looks right, but it doesn't feel like yours anymore. You know the stories behind your patterns, yet the distance between you and the people you love keeps growing. More understanding won't close that gap. You need someone to help you stop navigating by old maps to clear the noise, trust yourself again, and build something that actually feels like home

Divorce Therapists
How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
